Interventions are more effective when they last greater than 10 minutes, involve contact with a professional, provide at least four to seven sessions, and provide nicotine-replacement therapy (NRT). Group and individual counseling is effective, and interventions are more successful when they include social support and training in problem-solving, stress management, and relapse prevention. 

Beyond using measures that assess patterns and consequences of drug use, therapists and counselors may want to consider assessing other psychosocial factors that have been shown to be important in predicting successful (or unsuccessful) therapy and treatment outcomes (as discussed in Chapter 1). Many social workers are challenged by the task of how to best help the client with schizophrenia. Most agree, however, that medication treatment for the active symptomology of schizophrenia and the other psychotic disorders is an absolute necessity. Any type of verbal therapy by social workers or other mental health professionals is not productive until the client is stabilized, the psychosis is reduced, and some semblance of reality is restored. Once the client is stabilized, social work interventions that emphasize problem-solving methods may be used to address the significant problems that affect the daily lives of clients with schizophrenia. Strict behavioral intervention strategies may be employed that help clients become aware of their actions and the consequences on their levels of daily functioning (Sensky et al., 2000). 

The configuration also suggests an initiation by fire and water, an archetypal state that frequently appears at points in analytical work, when a deeper level of the entire psyche is engaged. This may occur after a long period of therapy in which the patient has struggled with issues of adaptation and problem-solving. This may also happen at any point in the treatment when a return to something fundamental is required by the psyche.
