There are probably multiple pathways in the conversion of an organic nitrate into N O, some chemical and some enzymatic. For the former the presence of thiol groups appears to be necessary [57, 58]. The overall reaction is shown in Eq. (10). This is not a balanced equation and does not reflect fully the course of the reaction. A number of studies have shown that thiols, both in vivo and in vitro, can affect this process. In most cases it appears that thiols act as a reducing agent, being converted to disulfide, while nitrite is released (Eq. (11)). [Pg.213]

The full extent to which saponins reduce cholesterol absorption requires further study. Because of the large number of saponins present in the food supply, it is possible that all of the mechanisms discussed earlier contribute to reduced cholesterol absorption. Unlike plant sterols in which their mode of action is relatively well defined, there are probably multiple effects of saponins within the intestinal tract, including their ability to interact with other dietary constituents and the ability of some saponins to be absorbed systemically. The regulatory effects of saponins on cellular cholesterol transport have not been examined. [Pg.184]

The way. this works (entropies additive, probabilities multiplicative) for our simple example is shown in Equation 10-17. [Pg.293]

Monomethyl and dimethylalkanes in the range C16-C20 are prominent in many cultured cyanobacteria as well as most cyanobacterial mat communities that have been studied (Section 8.03.5.3). No specific physiological role has been assigned to these hydrocarbons. Because they have probably multiple origins in ancient sediments and petroleum, these monomethyl and dimethylalkanes alone probably have limited chemotaxonomic specificity. However, they may be very useful in multivariate approaches for linking isotopic and molecular-structure data for a less ambiguous identification of sedimentary cyanobacterial lipids. [Pg.3962]

Cummins We have to be careful not to generalize when talking about persistent currents. Persistent currents could result, for example, from G protein modulation, PKC modulation or from modal gating without any underlying modulation. There are probably multiple persistent currents just as there are multiple fast Na + currents. The physiological consequences of different persistent currents are going to depend on the different biophysical properties of these currents. [Pg.232]

Purkinje cells express GluR-A flop, GluR-B flip and flop, and GluR-C flip mRNAs GluR-A expression is the weakest (Keinanen et al., 1990 Sommer et al., 1990 Monyer et al., 1991 Sato et al., 1993 see Fig. II-L for pan GluR-A to -D expression). There are thus probably multiple AMPA receptors on Purkinje cells for example, these could be differentially located at parallel fibre and climbing fibre synapses. [Pg.132]

The chemical composition of PM also plays an important role in determining potentially toxic human health effects (Gil et al. 2003). Unlike other pollutants, PM exposure is much more complex since it includes various chemical species in particles that have an ample range of diameters and shapes and widely varying toxicities. Given the complex mixture of urban PM, it is not easy to identify the biological mechanisms that have harmful effects on human health. Moreover, the mechanisms involved in the range of health outcomes associated with exposure to urban PM are probably multiple (Hopke and Rossner 2006). [Pg.509]

The District of Columbia used a Schonstedt GA 72 Cd fluxgate magnetometer and located about 12 anomalies in the area of the Rick Woods Pit. Most appeared to be single ordnance items but three or four resembled clusters of multiple shells. Previously, the District had flagged three such clusters using a Fisher M-Scope. Ironically, the spot that Woods indicated for his pit turned out to be directly uphill from the three previously identified anomalies. The District also reconfirmed these three anomalies using the Schonstedt device and interpreted them as probable multiple shell groups. [Pg.224]

Borer et al. 2009). The reasons for this fact are probably multiple, including underlying diseases, delays in the initiation of antibiotic treatment, and lack of effective antimicrobials (Patel et al. 2008). Yet, there is no equal molecule to substitute carbapenem antibiotics for the treatment of severe infections caused by multidmg-resistant Gram-negative bacteria. [Pg.308]
