It is clear that collaboration plays a major role in both systems. ANSI was founded in 1918 to coordinate standardization activities in the private sector, and today it is the coordinating organization in the U.S. national standards system. In contrast with ASTM it does not develop standards, but it does provide the mechanism for determination of need and arranges for competent organizations to perform the standards development work. Product certification is an essential part of the viability of organic producers, and is important in international trade. Some countries, for example in Europe, have subsidised the setting up of these systems. State help was provided with the implementation of a national protection of the word organic , with suitable standards and certification schemes.
