Priority assignment

The chief executive should formally document the organization s quality policy. This policy should include the relative priority assigned to continuous quality improvement, the acceptable standard for quality, and the system to achieve that standard. 

For compounds 7.42, the preferred substrate always had the 3D geometry shown here, which corresponded to an (R)- or -absolute configuration, depending on priorities assigned by the sequence rule, e.g., the (S,S)-enan-tiomer for X = CH2. The situation is not so clear-cut with compounds 7.43, with which contradictory results were obtained.

In much the same way that metabolomics can be used to infer function of unknown genes, it is likely to be increasingly used in the determination of mode of action of biologically active substances, be they naturally occurring or synthetic. Early efforts in this regard have heavily focused upon the discovery of new herbicides with novel modes of action, this is considered a priority assignment in plant protection research, see Grossmann (2005) for an example. 

Figure 5.6 gives examples of priorities assigned to stereogenic centers. 

In our discussion, C, will refer to the acetylenic carbon attached to the substituent of higher priority the other carbon is Cp. Priority assignments are made in the same manner as for R, S and E, Z specifications. 

Geometric isomerism is also possible in double-bonded carbon-heteroatom systems such as imines and oximes (CN), and in azo (NN) systems. For example, several cephalosporin derivatives contain an alkoxyimino side chain that may exist in or Z isomeric forms the azo compound prontosil may display similar isomerism (Fig. 14). A syn-anti system can also be applied to CN geometric isomers. In these cases, the priority assignments are made as described previously, and the isomer with highest priorities on the same face of the double bond are called syn, whereas those with these groups on opposite sides are named anti.
