Pretreatment continued methods

Both alkali and physical refining have been used for FFA removal (5). With alkali refining, batch or continuous methods may be used. Oil may be pretreated with phosphoric or organic acid for phospholipid hydration. The oil is then treated with 16-30 baume (Be ) caustic with 20-40% excess. The soaps settle and may be recovered as soapstock or foots (47). [Pg.1116]

The objective ia any analytical procedure is to determine the composition of the sample (speciation) and the amounts of different species present (quantification). Spectroscopic techniques can both identify and quantify ia a single measurement. A wide range of compounds can be detected with high specificity, even ia multicomponent mixtures. Many spectroscopic methods are noninvasive, involving no sample collection, pretreatment, or contamination (see Nondestructive evaluation). Because only optical access to the sample is needed, instmments can be remotely situated for environmental and process monitoring (see Analytical METHODS Process control). Spectroscopy provides rapid real-time results, and is easily adaptable to continuous long-term monitoring. After a few minutes irradiation with a high pressure mercury lamp at about 50 C, a rather complete cover of grafted acrylic acid, acrylamide and other vinyl monomers could be obtained. In later experiments a continuous grafting method has been developed where a tape or a fiber bundle after suitable pretreatment is grafted by UV irradiation for a few seconds. Many wastewater flows in industry can not be treated by standard aerobic or anaerobic treatment methods due to the presence of relatively low concentration of toxic pollutants. Ozone can be used as a pretreatment step for the selective oxidation of these toxic pollutants. Due to the high costs of ozone it is important to minimise the loss of ozone due to reaction of ozone with non-toxic easily biodegradable compounds, ozone decay and discharge of ozone with the effluent from the ozone reactor. By means of a mathematical model, set up for a plug flow reactor and a continuos flow stirred tank reactor, it is possible to calculate more quantitatively the efficiency of the ozone use, independent of reaction kinetics, mass transfer rates of ozone and reactor type. The model predicts that the oxidation process is most efficiently realised by application of a plug flow reactor instead of a continuous flow stirred tank reactor. [Pg.273]

Conversion in the liquid phase has the disadvantage that the carbon tetrachloride formed during the disproportionation of trichlorofluoromethane forms a complex compound with the aluminum trichloride possessing no catalytic effect, so that only a relatively small amount of trichlorofluoromethane can be converted with a predetermined amount of aluminum trichloride. The continuous gas-phase method in a tubular reactor is more practicable the temperature at which it takes place must be high enough to prevent any products from condensing on the catalyst. It is also possible to perform the disproportionation process continuously in the liquid phase in a tubular reactor, under pressure and at an increased temperature. In this case aluminum trichloride must first be activated by pretreatment (partial fluorination), since the partial fluorination of aluminum trichloride greatly reduces the tendency for complex compounds to form with the chlorinated hydrocarbon when this itself has formed. [Pg.282]
