The Preparation of Materials

About 10 kg of the pre-treated dust sample was homogenized by the following procedure the whole amount of dust was divided into four subsamples of about 2.5 kg each subsample was stored in a 5 L dark glass bottle [Pg.125]

Electrochemistry and Kinetics. The electrochemistry of the nickel—iron battery and the crystal stmctures of the active materials depends on the method of preparation of the material, degree of discharge, the age (Life cycle), concentration of electrolyte, and type and degree of additives, particularly the presence of lithium and cobalt. A simplified equation representing the charge—discharge cycle can be given as ... [Pg.552]

Each of these items listed, if properly employed, can transmit knowledge to the person who must keep the plant s machinery running. How well the information is transmitted depends entirely on the communication skills applied to the preparation of the materials. [Pg.742]

Important to their success includes the preparation of the material or compound. [Pg.526]

Zeolite-bentonite hybrid catalysts have been prepared from ZSM-5 and Beta zeolites supplied by Zeolyst International and bentonite. The zeolite to bentonite ratio was 35/65. The Si02 to A1203 ratio of ZSM-5 and Beta was 23 and 25, respectively. The preparation of the material was conducted in the following way. The zeolite and the bentonite were bound together through mixing in a 6 1 aqueous solution at 60°C for 2h,... [Pg.315]

Oxides play many roles in modem electronic technology from insulators which can be used as capacitors, such as the perovskite BaTiOs, to the superconductors, of which the prototype was also a perovskite, Lao.sSro CutT A, where the value of x is a function of the temperature cycle and oxygen pressure which were used in the preparation of the material. Clearly the chemical difference between these two materials is that the capacitor production does not require oxygen partial pressure control as is the case in the superconductor. Intermediate between these extremes of electrical conduction are many semiconducting materials which are used as magnetic ferrites or fuel cell electrodes. The electrical properties of the semiconductors depend on the presence of transition metal ions which can be in two valence states, and the conduction mechanism involves the transfer of electrons or positive holes from one ion to another of the same species. The production problem associated with this behaviour arises from the fact that the relative concentration of each valence state depends on both the temperature and the oxygen partial pressure of the atmosphere. [Pg.236]

Triphenylaluminum is useful as a component of catalyst systems for ionic or coordination polymerization of vinyl compounds. This preparation of the material in solid form enables the purity of the compound to be easily determined. The availability of solid triphenylaluminum permits the user a choice of solvents for a reaction, and a variety of concentrations of the reagent. Storage and dispensation of the reagent are more convenient in the solid form. [Pg.56]

The preparation of the material starts from of mesityl oxide and ethyl acetoacetate which are cyclized under acidic conditions. The resulting ethyl 4-oxo-2,6,6-trimethyl-2-cyclohexenecarboxylate is subsequently reduced and dehydrated. [Pg.73]

Fat retention capacity should be used only for the cases where aqueous preparations of the materials are treated with fats or oil (as in some food preparations), stress applied (usually by heating), and the separated oil measured. A common test of this nature is one used on meat emulsion systems following their cooking process. The special methodological influences strongly... [Pg.14]

In addition to the three fundamental operations just described. Ihe freeze-drving process involves several other operations necessary to achieve an economically feasible system for large-scale production. The general commercial process comprises (I) Preparation of the material (2) freezing (.1) conditioning of the froz.cn mass (4) drying, that is. sublimation and desorption and (5) conditioning the product. See Fig. 3,... [Pg.682]

By using the standard techniques known for 1-l.c., these alignments could also be achieved for the polymers 66>. However, because of the high viscosity of the polymers, the orientation requires annealing times up to several hours at temperatures some degrees below Tc depending on the chemical constitution of the material (refer to 2.3.1.3). In principle, no orientation can be observed, if the preparation of the material is performed in the l.c. state in the vicinity of a glass transition. [Pg.127]

The oxidizing power of M11O2 depends widely on the exact preparation of the material.10 Thus, its reactivity can vary from M11O2 in the form of the crystalline mineral pyrolusite, which is almost completely unable to oxidize alcohols at room temperature, to highly active forms that are dangerous because they may cause the spontaneous inflammation of organic solvents.11... [Pg.291]

In an investigation of factors affecting strength of synthetic fibers a modification was made in the preparation of the material and a series of separate preparations of fiber was made in pairs, one of the regular and one of the modified material and a number of properties of the resulting fibers were determined. The results for each... [Pg.50]

A variety of assays are being reported in the literature which measure the interaction of cells with biomaterials, be they surfaces of various textures or micro or nano-particulates. While considerable attention has been paid to proper preparation of the materials and their surfaces, less has been paid to the cells used as probes in such assays. We suggest that where possible, primary human cell cultures at relatively low PD numbers from isolation are used, of a cell type directly relevant to the material application, or in toxicity studies, the exposed tissue. We suggest very significantly erroneous conclusions may be drawn from assays using inappropriate cells. If sufficient quantities of low PD primaries are not available, it may be possible to use telomerase transfected cells with extended lifespan, but these must first be verified against the non-transfected cells in the assay to be employed. Furthermore, care must be taken to conduct such assays at a controlled temperature, preferably at the temperature the material will be subjected to in the body. [Pg.213]

Ingredient Preparation. Sensitive ingredients such as nitroglycerin are frequently stored or shipped diluted with a solvent. Before use in an experimental composition, distillation of the solvent and preparation of the material is necessary. [Pg.131]

Attention should be also paid to the information contained in the certificate about preparation of the material, adopted method of certification, certified values and their associated uncertainties, homogeneity and stability of the material, method of moisture determination, statements on traceability, expiry date, and instructions on how to proceed with the material. [Pg.70]

In the preparations included in this book, all the starting materials used in the syntheses meet the following criteria (1) the material is available commercially at relatively low cost (2) the preparation of the material has been given in Organic Syntheses or (3) the preparation is given in another place in this book. [Pg.3]
