Premium bond

At the maturity date, the bond s value is equal to its par or maturity value. So, as a bond s maturity approaches, the price of a discount bond will rise to its par value and a premium bond will fall to its par value— a characteristic sometimes referred to as pull to par value. ... [Pg.50]

As we mentioned earlier, it is difficult for credit portfolio managers (where the market is overwhelmingly noncallable) to actively manage convexity of their holdings. However, preferring higher coupon instruments and premium bonds over lower coupon and discount bonds tends to increase the convexity of the portfolio and in turn increases its total return. [Pg.814]

This demonstrates one of the conditions under which such reinforcement works best - the expenditure of little additional effort on the part of the individual, together with the potential for a large payoff. This is the principle on which football pools and premium bonds work. Indeed, the use of prize draws is widely used as a marketing technique. There are some managers, incidentally, who object to such schemes on the basis that they involve paying people extra to do what they are already paid to do. This is, of course, a legitimate position to take, but in situations where all else has failed adherence to principles such as these may have a cost - in this example, continued high levels of absenteeism. [Pg.49]

In Wyoming, Mike Brady opened North Fork Bullets a dozen years ago because, he says, he was obsessed with perfection. His first step was a line of premium bonded core soft point bullets. Next was a line of truncated cone flat point solids that would impact exactly the same down-range point, thus delivering a whopping amount of penetration, and he recently worked on a cup solid point as an expanding solid. These cup point solids bridge the gap between softs and solids. Bullets are now manufactured in Oregon. [Pg.171]

A first kind of these insurance products are called "catastrophe bonds" and consist in securitizing environmental risks in bonds, which could be sold to high-yield investors. The catastrophe bonds are able to transfer risk to investors that receive coupons that are normally a reference rate plus an appropriate risk premium. By these products, insurance companies limit risk exposure transferring natural catastrophe risk into the capital markets. In this way, with the involvement of the financial markets, their global size offers enormous potential for insurers to diversify risks. [Pg.34]

The owners funds, or equity, include the issued capital (i.e. the face value of the company s shares), capital reserves (funds received in ways distinct from operating profits, such as premiums on the sale of shares) and revenue reserves, which are the accumulated annual profits earned. The long-term loans include not only the sums borrowed from hanks and finance houses as well as bonds issued by the company, but also the provisions for future potential (but as yet unknown) costs for example the sums a company involved in asbestos liability litigation would prudently set aside against possible penalties and costs. Current liabilities include all bills received but not yet paid (for goods and services), and any short-term loans, due within a year, such as bank overdrafts. [Pg.275]

A bond is simply a long-term promissory note. It is a contract established between borrower and lender in a document called an indenture. A bond indenture includes a detailed description of assets that are pledged, together with any protective clauses and provisions for redemption. A trustee is appointed to look after the interest of the bondholders. The trustee is normally a commercial bank. Bonds may be issued with a call provision that enables a company to redeem its bonds at any date earlier than scheduled. Obviously, this would be an advantage to a company in times of falling interest rates. However, a company has to pay more than the par value of the bond for this privilege. The additional amount is called the bond premium. [Pg.666]

In an unrelated study, Stewart estimated the market risk premium by comparing Standard and Poor s 500 stocks with long-term (20-year) U.S. Treasury bonds from 1925 to 1989 (409). He found that the risk premium was only 5.8 percent over the period. This would imply a risk premium over the Treasury bill rate (adjusted for long-term forecasts) of just 7.0 percent. [Pg.281]

Finally the nature even of the unimolecular steps may be different near initiation than in the high temperature propagation environment. In the high temperature environment, entropy drives unimolecular processes toward simple bond rupture events. Near initiation, where energy is at a premium, lower barrier more complex unimolecular steps (such as those involving cyclic transition states) will be raised in importance. [Pg.56]
