Premature ignition

Montecatini Process. This partial combustion process operates at higher pressure, 405—608 kPa (4—6 atm), than the BASF and SBA processes. The burner dimensions are proportionately smaller. Because of the higher pressure, the danger of premature ignition of the methane—oxygen mixture is higher so that 2 vol % of steam is added to the gas mixture to alter the flammabiUty limits.

Premature ignition can be reduced or eliminated by redesigning the fuel delivery system, which can be categorized into three types central-, port-, and direct injection. Central and port fuel injections form the fuel-air mixture during the intake stroke. In the case of central injection (or a carburetor), the injection is at the inlet of the air intake manifold. In the case of port injection, fuel is injected at the inlet port. Direct injection is technologically sophisticated and involves forming the fuel-air mixture inside the combustion cylinder after the air intake valve has closed [27-36]. 

Once this has been achieved, each can be introduced into the engine appropriately to insure that no premature ignition takes place. 

Allow the resulting kernels to thoroughly dry. Caynnide tends to be hygroscopic (absorbs moisture from the air) and should be dried in a warm area before use. A preheated oven is best for this but make sure the temperrature is not over 150°F or premature ignition may result.

It sometimes happens that when bags of propellant of separate loaded ammunition are charged into a gun immediately after the previous round had been fired, a premature ignition of the charge takes place. This usually happens when one or several pieces of an incompletely burned powder bag from the previous charge remain glowing in the barrel. 

Many workers have stated that tetraethyllead is effective in increasing the intrinsic resistance of fuels to surface ignition. Part of the effectiveness is due undoubtedly to the activity of tetraethyllead in suppressing subsequent knock caused by the premature ignition of the charge (91). With proper allowance for this effect, tetraethyllead appears to increase the surface ignition resistance of those fuels to which it contributes knock...
