Loaded Adsorbents. Where highly efficient removal of a trace impurity is required it is sometimes effective to use an adsorbent preloaded with a reactant rather than rely on the forces of adsorption. Examples include the use of 2eohtes preloaded with bromine to trap traces of olefins as their more easily condensible bromides 2eohtes preloaded with iodine to trap mercury vapor, and activated carbon loaded with cupric chloride for removal of mercaptans. [Pg.255]

Nicorandil. Nicorandil is a potassium channel opener that can lower blood pressure 21, 20, and 29 mm Hg after single oral doses of 10, 20, and 30 mg, respectively (250). Diuretics have become the cornerstone of all treatment regimens of CHF (III—II3). They can reheve symptoms of pulmonary and peripheral edema. In mild CHF, the thia2ide-type diuretics are adequate unless the GFR falls below 30 ml,/min, as compared to 120 ml,/min in normal subjects. Diuretics improve left ventricular function in CHF due in part to decrease of preload. Expander-compressor shafts are preferably designed to operate below the first lateral critical speed and torsional resonance. A flame-plated band of aluminum alloy or similarly suitable material is generally applied to the shaft in the area sensed by the vibration probes to preclude erroneous electrical runout readings. This technique has been used on hundreds of expanders, steam turbines, and other turbomachines with complete success. Unless integral with the shaft, expander wheels (disks) are often attached to the shaft on a special tapered profile, with dowel-type keys and keyways. The latter design attempts to avoid the stress concentrations occasionally associated with splines and conventional keyways. It also reduces the cost of manufacture. When used, wheels are sometimes secured to the tapered ends of the shaft by a common center stretch rod which is pre-stressed during assembly. This results in a constant preload on each wheel to ensure proper contact between wheels and shaft at the anticipated extremes of temperature and speed. [Pg.274]

Another major second messenger in cells is calcium ion. Virtually any mammalian cell line can be used to measure transient calcium currents in fluorescence assays when cells are preloaded with an indicator dye that allows monitoring of changes in cytosolic calcium concentration. These responses can be observed in real time, but a characteristic of these responses is that they are transient. This may lead to problems with hemi-equilibria in antagonist studies whereby the maximal responses to agonists may be depressed in the presence of antagonists. Many designs incorporate the phenomenon of stress-relaxation. For example, in many products, when plastics are assembled they are placed into a permanently deflected condition, as for instance press fits, bolted assemblies, and some plastic springs. In time, with the strain kept constant the stress level will decrease, from the same internal molecular movement that produces creep. This gradual decay in stress at a constant strain (stress-relaxation) becomes important in applications such as preloaded bolts and springs where there is concern for retaining the load. The amount of relaxation can be measured by applying a fixed strain to a sample and then measuring the load with time. [Pg.73]
