Electron spectroscopy in its several modes has proved to be particularly powerful for determining the nature of species present on solid surfaces. These methods have been applied extensively to the characterization of SAMs, and they are finding an increasing application to mineral processing systems. Of the various available techniques. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) is particularly appropriate for the study of mineral surfaces because a knowledge of the chemical environment of atoms, in addition to elemental composition, is usually required. Under Part I of the act an IPC system controls emissions to air, land or water for the most polluting industrial and similar processes. IPC is limited to prescribed processes (e.g. chemical, fuel and power, waste disposal, minerals etc.) by prior authorization. Authorization is based on the requirement for owners/controllers to prevent release of prescribed substances or, where this is not practicable, to reduce the release to a minimum. Any residual release must be rendered harmless. To achieve these aims, operators must use the best practicable means not entailing excessive cost (BATNEEC). [Pg.354]

Preparation,—The processes already described for the production of potassium are applicable also, with slight modifications, for the preparation of sodium. The apparatus required is also of exactly the same description as in the case of potassium. The substances employed are either hydrated soda and iron, or carbonate of soda and charcoal. These are placed in a malleable iron, bottle—those in which mercury Is imported answer admirably—and heated to whiteness in a powerful wind furnace. The gas, which after some time makes its appearance, is conducted into a receiver of iron or copper containing mineral naphtha or rook oil, and which receiver is kept cold by surrounding it with cold water, which is frequently changed. It should, of course, be provided with a vent for the escape of the incondensable gases evolved during the decomposition. The operation is much more productive than in the case of potassium, owing to the fortunate circumstance that sodium does not combine with carbouio oxide. [Pg.894]

The initial assumption might be that a photobiological H2 process would not require any raw materials. However, any biological process requires water and an adequate supply of macronutrients (i.e., nitrogen and phosphorus) and possibly some supplemental micronutrients, depending upon what nutrients and minerals are already present in the water supply to the process. One method to reduce raw material costs would be to utilize the waste stream from another process. For example, effluent streams from wastewater treatment anaerobic digesters are nitrogen rich, and blowdown streams from power plants are relatively pure. [Pg.136]
