Power extraction

Another configuration having power collection from only two terminals is the Hall generator shown in Figure 5d. In this configuration, opposing electrode pairs are connected, and the current flow for power extraction is axial. E = 0, and... [Pg.416]

There are two ways of presenting steam balance data, schematically or tabulady. For both presentation types, a balance is made at each pressure level. In a schematic balance, such as that shown in Figure 9, horizontal lines are drawn for each pressure. The steam-using equipment is shown between the lines, and individual flows are shown vertically. Table 3 contains the same data as shown in Figure 9. In both cases the steam balance has been simplified to show only mass flows. A separate balance should be developed that identifies energy flows, including heat losses and power extraction from the turbines. [Pg.226]

The potential for power recovery from liquid streams exists whenever a liquid flows from a high-pressure source to one of lower pressure in such a manner that throttling to dissipate pressure occurs. Such throtthng represents a system potential for power that is the reverse of a pump—in other words, a potential for power extraction. Just as in a pump, there exists a hydraulic horsepower and a brake horsepower, except that in the recoveiy they are generated or available horsepowers. [Pg.2524]

In this method of ventilation, powered extract and input systems are provided. The ratio of the supply to extract will control the pressure produced within the space. [Pg.731]

Water Equipment Services, Inc.—Environmental Division (WES) developed the Vacu-Point technology, a new high-powered extraction process that, according to the developer, can remediate contaminated groundwater in an average of 90 days. The technology remediates sites... [Pg.1120]

TBP is a sufficiently powerful extractant for actinides that it may be used in diluted form. Dilution improves the hydrodynamic properties of the solvent, allowing more complete and rapid phase disengagement. Typically concentrations of 20-30 v/o TBP in OK are used in process flowsheets. Although TBP is relatively stable as an extractant, radiolysis does lead to the formation of some acidic phosphate esters, HDBP and H2MBP, which can impair process performance.289 An aqueous alkali wash of the recycled solvent is usually carried out to remove those by products. Radiolytic degradation of the diluent in the presence of nitric acid can result in the formation of hydroxamic acids,290 which can lead to fission product retention by the organic phase. Again the solvent wash is used to prevent the accumulation of such species. A comprehensive account of the industrial utilization of TBP has recently been published.291... [Pg.940]

The radiolytic and chemical degradation of TBP gives rise to monobu-tylphosphoric acid (MBP) and DBP, which are powerful extractants under low acidic conditions. As stripping in the PUREX process is carried out under such... [Pg.72]

Overview The battery is simply an electrochemical cell just as the fuel cell. The difference is that in the case of the fuel cell fuel is continuously supplied and electrical power extracted, whereas in the case of the storage battery, as the name implies, chemical energy is stored and electrical energy extracted on demand. [Pg.181]

If the purpose of the steam turbine is to convert power supplied in steam to shaft power, then the shaft power should be debited for the cost of the power extracted from the steam,... [Pg.37]

Nevertheless, availability remains as the main obstacle. Presently available amounts of EMFs are much less than are required for future applications. Use of catalysts remains as a good choice to promote the production yield, and more powerful extraction processes are also critical. More convenient and effective separation processes will surely promote the availability of EMFs. [Pg.299]

Continuous wave operation of COIL is facilitated by the hyperfine structure of the atom. Iodine has a nuclear spin of, so the P /2 and Pz/2 levels are split by hyperfine interactions. Figure 8 shows the allowed transitions between the hyperfine sublevels and a high resolution emission spectrum. The F = 3 — F" = 4 transition is most intense, and this is the laser line under normal conditions. Collisional relaxation between the hyperfine sub-levels of Pz 2 maintains the population inversion, while transfer between the Fi/2 levels extracts energy stored in the F = 2 level. Hence, if it is not sufficiently rapid, hyperfine relaxation can limit power extraction. [Pg.165]

General to all reactions, whether photochemical or not, is the loss of free energy caused by nonequilibrium conditions due to finite power extraction. Consider a chemical reaction in which a reactant A at chemical potential converted into a product B at chemical potential ju. ... [Pg.3760]
