Power density, of light

The common units of light intensity or power density of light emitted or received are as shown above. Care should be taken in comparing luminances. For example. Table 18.1 reveals that a tungsten filament lamp has about a tenth of the luminance of the sun, but the area of the sun s emitting surface is massively greater than that of a filament lamp, and therefore the luminous intensity of the sun is massively greater than the luminous intensity of the filament lamp. [Pg.118]

When scientists began measuring the intensity or power density of light given off as a function of wavelength 7(A) at various temperatures, they made some interesting observations ... [Pg.272]

Moreover, in recent years broad band lasers have appeared which lack any frequency modal structure, at the same time retaining such common properties of lasers as directivity and spatial coherence of the light beam at sufficiently high spectral power density. The advantages of such a laser consist of fairly well defined statistical properties and a low noise level. In particular, the authors of [245] report on a tunable modeless direct current laser with a generation contour width of 12 GHz, and with a spectral power density of 50 /xW/MHz. The constructive interference which produces mode structure in a Fabry-Perot-type resonator is eliminated by phase shift, introduced by an acoustic modulator inserted into the resonator. [Pg.77]

The more rectangular the. //E-curve appears, the higher the FF is and the better charge carriers are collected within the device. Finally, the conversion efficiency is defined as the ratio between electrical power density delivered by the solar cell under standard illumination conditions and the power density of the incident light Pnght... [Pg.363]

Verteporfin s delivery and activity are governed by principles of light energy. The fluence is the amount of light delivered, measured as joules per square centimeter. The power density is the rate at which the light is delivered, measured as milliwatts per square centimeter. To deliver a fluence of 50 J/cm at a power density of 600 mW/cm, an illumination time of 83 seconds is needed (because the energy of light delivered is a product of the time of illumination and the rate at which the power is delivered). [Pg.304]

In a PA experiment, the excited-state absorption spectrum is measured. The sample was excited by an amplitude- modulated pump beam and changes in the transmission of a probe beam are measured by lockin amplification of a photoreceiver. The 363-nm line of an argon ion laser at a power density of 30 mW/cm2 was used as the pump beam and a monochromated tungsten white-light source was used as the probe. The pump beam was modulated at 120 Hz by an acousto-optical modulator and the spectra were measured under... [Pg.296]

In summary, upon compression of orthorhombic sulfur a sequence a-Sg—>a-S—>p-S—>Sg with transition pressures of about 5 GPa, 6 GPa, and 11 2 GPa, respectively, were found in Raman studies if laser light with a wavelength of 515 nm was applied and if a certain threshold of the power density of the laser at the sample was exceeded. Since the Raman spectra... [Pg.65]

The relative edge power density is the output in mW/cm2 from the edge of radiant power at the emission wave-length under illumination by an incident (white light) power density of 100 mW/cm2 (=1 kW/m2) under AM 1 conditions. [Pg.10]

Experimentally, it is clear that different centers are metastable at diflferent temperatures depending upon the initial ESR spin densities and the type of sample, the temperature of irradiation, the power density of the exciting light, and perhaps several other variables. To complicate this situation further, there is once again disagreement as to the interpretation of these metastable, optically induced effects. One model suggests that there is an increase... [Pg.144]

There are excellent coincidences between vibration rotation transitions of the NO fundamental in the X n and some strong CO-laser lines near 5.2 jim. If we shine a few watts of this co-laser light into an absorption cell containing NO and Ar, those y- and p-bands occur at IR-laser power densities of less than 1 kW/cm. This means that there must be a way for the energy that is put into the fundamental vibration of the diatomic molecule to get up the ladder of vibrational states to the level of electronic excitation or to the dissociation limit [3,2/3,3]. For a diatomic molecule, particularly at these low power densities, multiphoton excitation is not possible. [Pg.31]

Because of the much higher spectral power density of most lasers compared to incoherent light sources the detector noise is generally negligible in laser... [Pg.6]
