Because of the risk of lead poisoning, the exposure of children to lead-based paint is a significant public health concern. The first step in the quantitative analysis of lead in dried paint chips is to dissolve the sample. Corl evaluated several dissolution techniques. " In this study, samples of paint were collected and pulverized with a Pyrex mortar and pestle. Replicate portions of the powdered paint were then taken for analysis. Results for an unknown paint sample and for a standard reference material, in which dissolution was accomplished by a 4-6-h digestion with HNO3 on a hot plate, are shown in the following table.

Colour layers of artworks are a combination of powder dyes or pigments with binders. Although the binders form the minority of the colour layer, the name of the painting techniques are derived from them at present the most common techniques are oil and tempera.

In powder coating the powder paint can be applied by either of the following two techniques ... 

A painting technique was used to fonn electrodes on both sides of SPIES membranes, using ink slurry. This slurry consisted of platinum black, water, and Nafion solution (5 wt%) as binder. Catalyst loading of 5 mg cm" was used. The ink slurry was sonicated to break up the catalyst powder in order to obtain a homogenous distribution. Several layers of the ink were painted on both sides of the membranes. Samples were dried at 80°C under vacuum for 10 h to eliminate aU solvents. Membrane electrode assembly (MEAs) with effective areas of 5 cm were fabricated. 

Since the early 1990s, some users of CAB technology have successfully implemented dry flux application methods. Based on the principles of powder-paint technology, an alternative application technique was introduced in the brazing industry. 

Barium carbonate also reacts with titania to form barium titanate [12047-27-7] BaTiO, a ferroelectric material with a very high dielectric constant (see Ferroelectrics). Barium titanate is best manufactured as a single-phase composition by a soHd-state sintering technique. The asymmetrical perovskite stmcture of the titanate develops a potential difference when compressed in specific crystallographic directions, and vice versa. This material is most widely used for its strong piezoelectric characteristics in transducers for ultrasonic technical appHcations such as the emulsification of Hquids, mixing of powders and paints, and homogenization of milk, or in sonar devices (see Piezoelectrics Ultrasonics). 

In this book we introduce major techniques used in designing and developing, roughly in the sequence in which they will be used. We show how techniques have been used (or could have been used) in a variety of products a laundry detergent, insulated windows, toothpaste, anti-fouling paint, an insulin injector, a powder coating, a box of matches, herbicide capsules, foamed snacks, a pharmaceutical tablet.
