Potato processing nutrients

Special costs of up to 131/m have been imposed by the J.R. Simplot Company. This additional expense depends on site characteristics and may include supplementary technical assistance, soil enhancements, nutrients, or a carbon source in the form of Simplot potato processing by-product (D11075Y, p. 32). 

Thompson et al. (24) also verified that the addition of trace minerals to potato process effluents has little effect on surfactinproductionby B. subtilis ATCC 21332. In fact, the addition of com steep liquor had a detrimental effect on biosurfactant production, whereas the addition of trace minerals had no effect on surface tensions. On the other hand, growth rates were marginally higher with added nutrients. 

The process is carried out in 500 mL. flasks containing 100 mL. of a suitable nutrient medium. The flasks are shaken by a rotary shaker (200 revolutions/minute eccentric throw 10 cm.). The optimal incubation temperature is at 27° C. The relative moisture is 85-90%. The cultivation is carried out in the dark. A flask is inoculated with the mycelium which is obtained from a 10 days culture in potato-glucose-agar of one of the above-described new strains of Claviceps paspali Stevens and Hall. Starchy substrates that have been used in SSF processes include rice, cassava, wheat bran, rice bran, buckwheat seeds, rice bran, corn meal, sweet potato residue, and banana meal.
