The brown crystalline manganese(III) acetate dihydrate is of considerable commercial importance because it is often used as the source material for other trivalent manganese compounds. It can be made by oxidation of manganese(II) acetate using chlorine or potassium permanganate, or by reaction of manganese(II) nitrate and acetic anhydride. 

Manufacture. The only current U.S. manufacturer of trimesic acid is Amoco Chemical Co. It is produced by oxidation of mesitylene (1,3,5-trimethylbenzene) via the Hquid-phase oxidation in acetic acid using the cobalt— manganese—bromine catalyst system (138). This is a variant of the system used to produce terephthaUc and isophthaUc acids as well as trimellitic anhydride. American Bio-Synthetics Corp. did produce it by batch oxidation of mesitylene with potassium permanganate.

Barium peroxide had been used instead of potassium permanganate to purify acetic anhydride. Several operations had been carried out and the technicians had realised that this medium gives rise to mild deflagrations. During the last test a very violent detonation took place. It was thought that acetyl peroxide had formed. 

A great number of transformations has been performed on narceine imide (116) by Czech researchers. Oxidation with potassium permanganate in acetone or with nitric acid caused the cleavage of the alkaloid, giving rise to hemipinic imide (127). A similar result was noted by Rdnsch (129,130) during Lemieux-Johnson oxidation of ene lactam 152 (129,130) in this reaction the basic component (156) was isolated as well. The use of hydrogen peroxide in acetone converted 116 to (Z)-narceine imide N-oxide, which under the action of acetic anhydride underwent N-dealkylation (135).

For 2003, 64 Governments reported imports of acetic anhydride and 73 reported imports of potassium permanganate. The number of Governments reporting licit requirements for acetic anhydride and potassium permanganate was also high.
