The vast majority of polymer education focused on graduate and postgraduate education from the late 1930 s to 1974. Early progress was delayed because of World War II. 

Many of the editors and authors of these books and numerous research and review journal articles were from industry and represent a continued, critical commitment and investment by industry in postgraduate education. Others are from outside the USA emphasizing the necessary cross-fertilization of scientist and scientific knowledge critical in the development of a science. 

In summary, the period from the 1940 s through 1973 saw a steady, healthy increase in postgraduate education spearheaded by academics, industry and government and a slower, steady increase in the number of schools offering graduate education in polymer chemistry, but the latter was clearly undernourished in comparison with the relative importance of polymer chemistry in industry. Satisfying the examiners, however, is not the end of the story. Postgraduate education is a continuing process, and we hope that this series will also be of benefit to established anaesthesiologists, and those in other related specialities, who want to keep up to date with recent developments in physiology and pharmacology.

Traineeship A short, intensive, clinical and didactic postgraduate educational program intended to provide the pharmacist with knowledge and skills needed to provide a high level of care to patients with specific diseases or conditions. 

The University of Buenos Aires offers a postgraduate education programme in pharmaceutical medicine, comprising 420 teaching hours and 240 practice hours. 

Key questions to be addressed by the Commission included What is the mission of pharmacy practice that should serve as the basis for pharmaceutical education What types of pharmacy manpower are needed to fulfill this mission What should be the curricular emphasis in an entry-level pharmacy practice degree What should be the length of the curriculum and title of the degree When should differentiation occur in the continuum of pharmaceutical education and training, and what arc the roles of postgraduate educational experiences What are the needs of the pharmacy enterprise for pharmaceutical scientists and clinical scientists, and what are appropriate models for such training What changes in accreditation standards should be made by the American Council on Pharmaceutical Education to facilitate the broad implementation of such reforms ... 

Pharmaceutical education promotes advances in pharmaceutical care by fostering postgraduate residencies and fellowships in the clinical sciences and differentiated areas of pharmacy practice. It provides structured postgraduate education and training through which practitioners maintain their competence and acquire new competencies to serve the changing needs of society. 

An increasing problem to the busy physician is finding the time for postgraduate education. The detail man is no exception. The number of pharamaceutical companies seems to be increasing, and more than 30 representatives now visit my office as well as men from x-ray laboratories, clinical laboratories, supply companies, surgical supply houses, etc. Time simply does not allow for a session with each representative at every visit, and I am sure that most physicians hope that these men realize this. 

Equally helpful is the presence of the detail men with their technical exhibits at medical meetings. Here the physician, away from his office, may seek the drug information he needs at his leisure. He is at the meeting intent on postgraduate education and is tuned in to the learning process. 

Most physicians seek postgraduate education at every opportunity to keep abreast of new knowledge and techniques. The nearer these educational programs are to the busy physicians, the better their attendance since they can continue to serve their patients. Thus, the popularity of postgraduate education has increased in community hospitals. The pharmaceutical industry has performed a great service in contributing so generously to these local seminars. 

Mention was made previously to advertisements in medical journals as a means of communication between the drug industry and the clinical physician. This mechanism must rate high on the value scale of effectiveness in postgraduate education, and the observant doctor recognizes a double contribution in this source. First, he has the opportunity to scan quickly for names he does not recognize and which he may wish to pursue further secondly, he has available the benefits of the scientific articles in a journal made economically possible by the advertising. 

As has been mentioned before, the setting up—for more than a decade— of the Spanish Inter-university Master and PhD Programmes in Sustainable Chemistry is one of the main achievements of the REDQS.
