The lac repressor monomer, a chain of 360 amino acids, associates into a functionally active homotetramer. It is the classic member of a large family of bacterial repressors with homologous amino acid sequences. PurR, which functions as the master regulator of purine biosynthesis, is another member of this family. In contrast to the lac repressor, the functional state of PurR is a dimer. The crystal structures of these two members of the Lac I family, in their complexes with DNA fragments, are known. The structure of the tetrameric lac repressor-DNA complex was determined by the group of Mitchell Lewis, University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, and the dimeric PurR-DNA complex by the group of Richard Brennan, Oregon Health Sciences University, Portland. [Pg.143]

For a monolayer film, the stress-strain curve from Eqs. (103) and (106) is plotted in Fig. 15. For small shear strains (or stress) the stress-strain curve is linear (Hookean limit). At larger strains the stress-strain curve is increasingly nonlinear, eventually reaching a maximum stress at the yield point defined by = dT Id oLx x) = 0 or equivalently by c (q x4) = 0- The stress = where is the (experimentally accessible) static friction force [138]. By plotting T /Tlx versus o-x/o x shear-stress curves for various loads T x can be mapped onto a universal master curve irrespective of the number of strata [148]. Thus, for stresses (or strains) lower than those at the yield point the substrate sticks to the confined film while it can slip across the surface of the film otherwise so that the yield point separates the sticking from the slipping regime. By comparison with Eq. (106) it is also clear that at the yield point oo. [Pg.53]

In fact, the variable x /Gi controls the "crossover" from one "universality class" " to the other. I.e., there exists a crossover scaling description where data for various Gi (i.e., various N) can be collapsed on a master curve Evidence for this crossover scaling has been seen both in experiments and in Monte Carlo simulations for the bond fluctuation model of symmetric polymer mixtures, e.g Fig. 1. One expects a scaling of the form... [Pg.199]

After returning to Cambridge in 1667, Newton was elected Fellow of Trinity College. Two years later he succeeded Barrow as Lucasian Professor. In 1696 Newton moved to London. He served first as Warden and from 1699 to his death in 1727 as Master of the Royal Mint. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of London m 1671, and the President of this society in 1703, a position he retained for the rest of his life. He also semed two undistinguished terms as a Member of Parliament for the University of Cambridge (1689-1690 and 1701—1702). He was knighted in Cambridge in 1705. [Pg.844]

The British physicist, famous for his discovei y of the electron, was born in Cheetham, near Manchester, on December 18, 1856. He first entered Owens College (later Manchester University) at the early age of fourteen. In 1876 Thomson won a scholarship in Mathematics to Trinity College, Cambridge, and remained a member of the College for the rest of his life. He became a Fellow in 1880, Lecturer in 1883 and Master in 1918, a position he held with great flair until his death on August 30, 1940. [Pg.1134]

At the age of sixteen, Townes entered Furman University and received two bachelor s degi ees (modern languages and physics) in 193.S. He continued his education, receiving a master s at Uuke University in 1937 and a doctorate at Cal Tech in 1939. In the summer of 1939, Bell Labs hired him. Numerous lines of research were being undertaken simultaneously at Bell Labs. Most of the work done by Townes initially dealt with basic research and the transmission of telephone and television signals. Worldwide political events, however, soon changed this emphasis. [Pg.1141]

Each MWD company ran a full suite of MWD/LWD logs that were compared to benchmark wireline logs obtained by averaging the wireline logs with the least standard deviation errors. The data have been analyzed in the oil and service companies [128] and at Louisiana State University (LSU) where two master of science theses were completed utilizing this data [129,130]. The general conclusions of the LSU studies are as follows ... [Pg.1078]
