Poster headings

This conference was a well balanced mixture of plenary and invited lectures as well as poster contributions. They have been arranged in this volume under the following headings ... 

Bulleted fragments often replace complete sentences in posters. No period is needed after a fragment. When possible, use parallel language in lists and headings. (See appendix A.)... 

Bulleted or numerical lists Discussion items and conclusions may be presented in paragraph or list form. In Discussion section lists, complete sentences are more common than fragments. (See the guidelines presented in the poster Methods section for formatting these lists.) Conclusions are usually set apart from the Discussion section with a separate heading. 

Explicit headings serve as navigational signposts clear headings contribute to the flow of an effective poster. 

Look over the text that you have written for your poster (chapter 9). Next, decide what section headings you wiii use, what graphics you wiii inciude in each section, and how much space each section wiii require. When these pieces are in piace, experiment with iayout and seiect a format (i.e., the coiumn, row, or coiumn-and-row format) that is best for your poster. Begin revising your text and graphics so that they fit the aiiotted spaces. 

Text style and special effects (e.g., bold, italics, shadows) must also be considered when making decisions about fonts. Bolding can be used effectively, primarily for the title, authors names and affiliations, section headings, and graphics labels (e.g.. Table 1, Fig. 3) contained in titles or captions (not in the main text). Too much bolding, however, can distract the viewer (or, worse, divert the viewer s attention from important content) and make your poster difficult to read. 

The poster title and section headings are the only appropriate place for most other text effects (e.g., italics, shadliEWf, outline, ALL CAPS), because they generally make the text more difficult to read. 

Organization Check your overall organizational structure. Did you follow the move structures that were suggested in chapter 91 Is each section of the poster easy to identify Does each section contain appropriate headings and information ... 

The typical format is that of a scientific report (see Box 52.1), i.e. with the same headings, but with a considerably reduced content. Never be tempted to spend the minimum amount of time converting a piece of scientific writing into poster format. At scientific meetings, the least interesting posters are those where the author simply displays pages from a written communication (e.g. a journal article) on the poster board Keep references within the text to a minimum - interested parties can always ask you for further information.

On newsprint or poster board, prepare the headings for a class Water Mixture Results Table (see Figure 5-3). 

Type and figures should be balanced over the entire poster as much as possible to avoid distraction that is, font size and style should be uniform, and figures should be of similar size. Type with letters that are 3/8 in. high (e.g., Times New Roman 50-point boldface font) is recommended. The size of Times New Roman 24-point boldface should be considered an absolute minimum for the text. Headings should be larger type than the text, boldface, on lines by themselves, and have blank space above and below them. 

Although the illustration was based on classical motifs, Soderston connected it to the origin of the book by making the Atlas figure a native American, with tawny skin, loin cloth, and head band, linking it to the aboriginal aspect of the 1935 ACS poster (Figure 1).
