Maximum information is obtained by making Raman measurements on oriented, transparent single crystals. The essentials of the experiment are sketched in Figure 3. The crystal is aligned with the crystallographic axes parallel to a laboratory coordinate system defined by the directions of the laser beam and the scattered beam. A useful shorthand for describing the orientational relations (the Porto notation) is illustrated in Figure 3 as z(xz) y. The first symbol is the direction of the laser beam the second symbol is the polarization direction of the laser beam the third symbol is the polarization direction of the scattered beam and the fourth symbol is the direction of the scattered beam, all with respect to the laboratory coordinate system. [Pg.433]

The first successful application of the continuous wave (CW) He-Ne gas laser as a Raman excitation source by Kogelnik and Porto (14) was reported in 1963. Since that time, significant improvements in instrumentation have been continually achieved which have circumvented a great number of problems encountered with mercury lamp sources. The renaissance of Raman spectroscopy has also been due to improvements in the design of monochromators and photoelectric recording systems. [Pg.306]

Heavy metals. The profiles of sediment and pollutant depositions and the relationships of concentrations with time have been reconstructed. For most metals the highest accumulations took place between the fifties and the sixties, when the fastest industrial development of Porto Marghera took place. In Figure 2 the concentration profiles of three of the most interesting metals (Hg, Pb, Cd) are plotted vs. depth. Data were "normalized" (i.e. divided) by the background levels, as metals have different natural presence in the environment. This leads to accumulation factors, referred to pre-industrial background values. Any derived data tell... [Pg.291]

It is well known that certain microorganisms are able to effect the deracemization of racemic secondary alcohols with a high yield of enantiomerically enriched compounds. These deracemization processes often involve two different alcohol dehydrogenases with complementary enantiospedficity. In this context Porto ef al. [24] have shown that various fungi, induding Aspergillus terreus CCT 3320 and A. terreus CCT 4083, are able to deracemize ortho- and meta-fluorophenyl-l-ethanol in good... [Pg.122]

Acknowledgements. The author is very much indebted to the editor, Professor Ulrich Suter, for critically reading the manuscript and providing a number of valuable comments. Most sincere thanks are also due to the author s Portuguese friends Dr Mario Rui Costa and Dr Rolando Dias as well as Filomena, Luis and Emilia from the University of Porto for creating a special atmosphere which helped to alleviate the difficult task of the completion of this manuscript. The manuscript would not have been possible without the technical help of the author s son Ilya and wife Natasha to whom he owes his most sincere gratitude for their never-ending patience. [Pg.202]
