Adhesives and Sealants. Various grades of chloriaated paraffins are used as nonvolatile iaert fire-retardant plasticizers and modifying resias ia adhesives and sealants (3). They find wide appHcation ia polysulfide, polyurethane, acryUc, and butyl sealants for use ia building and constmction. The low volatihty high chlorine types are also employed ia sealants for double- and triple-glazed wiadows. [Pg.44]

Resins for advanced composites can be classified according to their chemistry typical resins are polyaryletherketones, polysulfides, polysulfones, and a very broad class of polyimides containing one or more additional functional groups (Table 2) (see also Engineering plastics). [Pg.37]

Many curing systems bring about aHquid—to—soHd conversion of the polysulfide polymers. Most curing agents produce an initial soHd mass characterized by a high degree of plasticity and poor elasticity. The development of elastic properties is so slow that the materials are not suitable for the accurate reproduction of undercut areas found ia oral stmctures. [Pg.492]

Although inhibitors are deliberately added to the silicone formulation to control cure rate, unwanted cure inhibition can be caused by other species that react to form strong complexes with the platinum catalyst. Most notable of these undesired inhibitors include organotin and other organometallic compounds, sulfur, polysulfides, polysulfones or other sulfur-containing materials, amines, urethanes or amine-containing materials, unsaturated hydrocarbons in plasticizers, and some solder flux residues. [Pg.687]

A number of plastics are condensation polymers and include polyesters and nylons that are not as highly oriented as the same materials but in fiber form. Other plastics have been developed that have outstanding heat stability, strength, and other properties that allow their wide use. These plastics include polycarbonates, polyimides, polybenzimidazoles, polysulfides, polyethers, polysulfones, and polyketones. [Pg.131]

There are a number of inert binders such as polyester, epoxy, polysulfide, polyurethane which have been reported as binders for composite propellants and plastic bonded explosives (PBXs). At present, hydroxy-terminated polybutadiene (HTPB) is regarded as the state-of-the-art workhorse binder for such applications. However, the recent trend is to use energetic binders such as poly [3,3-bis(azidomethyl oxetane)] [poly(BAMO)], poly (3-azidomethyl-3-methyl oxetane) [poly(AMMO)], PNP, GAP diol and triol, nitrated HTPB(NHTPB), poly(NiMMO), poly(GlyN) and nitrated cyclodextrin polymers poly(CDN) for PBXs and composite propellants in order to get better performance. [Pg.115]

Formulation. Polysulfide-based sealants are formulated with appropriate ingredients to obtain the desired properties for a particular application. A typical formulation contains liquid polysulfide polymer, curing agent, cure accelerators (bases) or retarders (acids), fillers, plasticizers, thixotropes, and adhesion promoters. [Pg.457]

Titanates have been instrumental in the bonding of fluorinated resins to packaging films, poly(hydantoin)—polyester to polyester wire enamel, polysulfide sealant to polyurethane (a phosphated titanate is recommended), polyethylene to cellophane using a titanated polyethylenimine, and silicone mbber sealant to metal or plastic support using polysilane (Si—H) plus polysiloxane (Si—OR) and titanate as the adhesive ingredients (450—454). Polyester film coated first with a titanium alkoxide, then with a poly(vinyl alcohol)—polyethylenimine blend, becomes impermeable to gases (455). [Pg.161]

Polyurethane sealant formulations use TDI or MDI prepolymers made from polyether polyols. The sealants contain 30—50% of the prepolymer the remainder consists of pigments, fillers, plasticizers, adhesion promoters, and other additives. The curing of the sealant is conducted with atmospheric moisture. One-component windshield sealants utilize diethyl malonate-blocked MDI prepolymers (46). Several polyurethane hybrid systems, containing epoxies, silicones, or polysulfide, are also used. [Pg.350]

Because of their excellent flexibility, epoxy-polysulfide adhesives are commonly used for bonding plastic substrates where differences in thermal expansion are a concern. [Pg.217]

In manufacturing explosive charges which are required to have a certain mechanical strength or rubber-elastic toughness, Cyclonite is incorporated into curable plastic materials such as polyurethanes, polybutadiene or polysulfide and is poured into molds (-> Plastic Explosives). [Pg.121]

High-brisance crystalline explosives, such as RDX or octogen, can be embedded in curable or polyadditive plastics such as polysulfides, polybutadiene, acrylic acid, polyurethane, etc. The mixture is then cured into the desired shape. Other components such as aluminum powder can also be incorporated. The products obtained can be of any desired size, and specified mechanical properties can be imparted to them, including rubber-like elasticity (-> LX and -> PBX). They can also be shaped into foils. [Pg.318]

Liquid sulfur-dicyclopentadiene (DCP) solutions at 140°C undergo bulk copolymerization where the melt viscosity and surface tension of the solutions increase with time. A general melt viscosity equation rj == tj0 exp(aXH), at constant temperature, has been developed, where tj is the viscosity at time t for an S -DCP feed composition of DCP mole fraction X and rj0 (in viscosity units), a (in time 1), and b (a dimensionless number, -f- ve for X < 0.5 and —ve for X > 0.5) are empirical constants. The structure of the sul-furated products has been analyzed by NMR. Sulfur non-crystallizable copolymeric compositions have been obtained as shown by thermal analysis (DSC). Dodecyl polysulfide is a viscosity suppressor and a plasticizer for the S8-DCP system. [Pg.38]

Dodecyl polysulfide, DDPS [CH3-(-CH2-hi Sn-(-CH2-hi CH8, where the average value of n = 4] has been synthesized to investigate its properties as a potential plasticizer. It possesses almost no odor because of its low vapor pressure reflected in its high boiling point (greater than 300°C), above which decomposition occurs. [Pg.56]

Technology to modify and control the crystalline nature of sulfur has advanced significantly in recent years. The beneficial effects of sulfur plasticizers, such as olefins and polysulfides, have been well documented (2, 3, 4). Fillers, reinforcing agents, and other modifiers can enhance further the desirable properties of sulfur (4). At the same time, they can improve its durability and thermal shock resistance. [Pg.222]
