Polymer, classification

Table 1.5 is a breakdown of the consumption by additive class. Total EU additive consumption is reported as 6989 kt (1997) growing up to 9031 kt (2002), with tillers 4346 kt, plasticisers 940 kt and colourants 728 kt (in 1997) being the main classes. Additive consumption by polymer classification for Europe is given in Table 1.6. [Pg.11]

Apply principles of glass transition and polymer crystallinity to polymer classification. [Pg.2]

Similarly to small molecules, polymers can be classified based on their chemical nature, i.e. based on the functional groups present in their molecule. However, different from small molecules, one important element in polymer classification is the chemical structure of the polymeric backbone. The attached side atoms or groups of atoms to the polymer backbone play a different role compared to that of the presence of various atom types or groups of atoms in the backbone. For example, it is a significant difference between poly(oxy-1,4-phenylene-oxy-ethylene) that contains phenyl groups and oxygen atoms in the polymer backbone and poly(phenyl vinyl ether) that is a vinyl type polymer with a carbon chain as backbone, although both polymers are ethers. The two polymers are synthesized differently and have quite different properties. Their structures are shown below ... [Pg.17]

Class indexes are serving numerals associated with the chemical class identification numbers (shown in the Classification Guide - page xxiii). Since some of the substances could be referred to more than one class, a few indexes indicated by / are presented in order of the preferred sequence described in the Polymer Classification part. These indexes could be used for searching and isolation of a sought class (extended by having recessive features as secondary indexes). [Pg.30]
