Polymers and Polymer Additives

The use of reversed-phase HPLC for the characterization of oligomers, polymers and polymer additives has received much attention recently. Twelve polymer additives (Irganox 245,259, 565,1010, 1035 Tinuvin P, 234,320,326,327,328 Anox 3114) were well resolved on a 40°C C]g column (A = 254 run) using a 92/8 methanol/ water mobile phase [233]. Elution was complete in 90 min. Confirmation of peak identity was obtained by the use of a photodiode array detector. The k values for eight selected solutes were tabulated for methanol/water compositions ranging from 85/15 to 95/5. [Pg.115]

A polyethylene resin stabilizer, Cyasorb LTV 1084 ([2,2 -thiobis(4-r-octylphenol-ato)]-n-butylamine Ni(Il)), and its degradation products were monitored using a C]g column (A — 285 nm) and a 94.5/5.0/0.5 IPA/water/acetic acid mobile phase [234], Ten other polymer additives (e.g., BHT, BHEB, UV 531, Isonox 129, Ethyl 330, Irgafos 168) were monitored as well. Elution times were reported and fell in the range 2-12 min. Concentration ranges of 10-500 mg/L were used. [Pg.116]

Isodecyl end-capped ptopylenediol adipate polyester plasticizers were characto -ized using a pentafluorophenyl column (A = 210nm and IR= 1790-1680cm ) and a 92/8 methanol/water mobile phase. Sample elution was complete in 25 min [Pg.116]

Novolac resins (phenol/formaldehyde condensates). were characterized on a 50°C C g column (A = 280nm) using a 40-min 40/60 - 100/0 methanol/water gradient [Pg.116]

Two polyethylene glycol (PEG) polymer distributions were characterized with respect to their molecular weight. A PEG 300 was analyzed in 10 min on a Cjg column with a 30/70 methanol/water mobile phase [239]. Similarly, a PEG 600 sample was eluted in 25 min. Good oligomer resolution was achieved for both polymers. Sample concentrations ranged Irom 5 to I5g/L. An evaporative light scattering detector (ELSD) was used. [Pg.116]

Solubility, extraction and modification of polymers and polymer additives in supercritical carbon dioxide... [Pg.373]

Applications of supercritical fluids for coatings and impregnation of porous and fibrous substrates (e.g., polymer fibers, wood, composite materials) with various chemicals are discussed in a number of articles (50-52). Mandel and Wang (53) reported the use of a solution of polymers diluted with SCCO2 for powder-coating applications. They reported that Ferro Corporation has developed the so-called VAMP process used in the production of powder coatings, new polymers and polymer additives, and various biomaterials, with good potential for productions of pharmaceuticals. [Pg.349]

Chromatography with a supercritical fluid as mobile phase was first reported more than twenty years ago [1], although only in recent years have its advantages been realized. These are especially relevant to oligomers, polymers, and polymer additives, and supercritical fluid chromatography (SFC) is finding increasing use in analyses in polymer chemistry. [Pg.217]

However, a problem appears with the various qualifications of the specialists necessitated by the work. There should be the specialists in polymers and polymer additives, the people responsible for the food, the experts in packaging, but also the bacteriologists as well as the analysts, but fortunately, the experts in chemical engineering could imite all those people, and the first step is the introduction of the dimensionless mmibers. The dimensionless number allows those people to work independently, nevertheless having in mind the same objective. [Pg.218]

Prof. Fowkes s flow calorimetric work led to important advances in the understanding of the interactions between mineral fillers, polymers, and polymer additives. The work of S. T. Joslin and F. M. Fowkes [29] in which they time-sliced the outputs from an FMC and its accompanying DSD enabled them to determine differential molar heats of adsorption as a function of progress in the adsorption process, and gave an indication of the heterogeneity of strength of the acid or base adsorption sites on the filler or pigment surfaces. [Pg.172]

A combination of TGA and IR spectroscopy or FT-IR spectroscopy has also been used to carry out EGA in polymer and polymer additive degradation studies. The Stanton Redcroft apparatus for combining thermogravimetric apparatus with FT-IR spectroscopy is described in Section 9.3.2. This equipment combines the following features ... [Pg.327]

Within the technologies of polyethylene terephthalate production, this chapter focuses on nonpolymer modifications. That means, that speciality products based on bicomponent systems (combinations with different polymers), and polymer additives (for anti-pilling, antistatic, flame-retardant, antibacterial and heat resistance properties) are not specifically described. [Pg.160]

Applications of IR spectroscopy to investigations of a variety of real surfaces were illustrated elsewhere [123,155]. ASTME573-96 relates to standard practices for internal reflection spectroscopy [201]. Aldrich/IChem/STJ ATR-FTIR spectral libraries hold 1567 polymers and polymer additives and 949 dyes and pigments [65a]. [Pg.34]

Laser-induced fluorescence data provide a wide variety of detailed information about physical and chemical reactions. Laser-based time-resolved (picosecond) fluorescence spectroscopic techniques have been used to investigate the mechanism of photo-stabilisation by UVAs such as benzophenones, ben-zotriazoles and polymer-bound UV stabilisers [117]. Such ultrafast spectroscopic measurements can provide insight into the dynamics of the primary energy dissipation processes in polymers and polymer additives following light absorption. Excimer LIF spectra of plasticised PVC showed two distinct regions... [Pg.344]

LD-FTMS of polymers and polymer additives was recently reviewed [222]. [Pg.363]
