Polymeric Biodegradable Packages

Currently, NatureWorks is largest producer of PLA for domestic applications. NatureWorks employs lactide ring-opening polymerization for the mass production of 140,000 MT per year of PLA, which is branded as Ingeo . NatureWorks PLA is produced mainly for biodegradable packaging, containers, clothing, fibers, etc. Purac is the major producer of PLA for the biomedical and pharmaceutical industries. [Pg.302]

Nonetheless, artificial biodegradable aliphatic polyesters are still mainly based on the industrial polymerization of monomers such as glycolic acid (PGA), lactic acid (PLA), and caprolactone (PCL). (See Figure 12.29). These polyesters are applied in implants, absorbable sutures, controlled-release packaging, and degradable films and moldings. [Pg.319]

The ring-opening polymerization (ROP) of cyclic esters can be used to generate biodegradable polyesters such as poly(caprolactone) (PCL), poly(hydroxybutyrate) (PHB), and poly(lactic acid) (PLA) in a controlled fashion. Of these polyesters PLA is the most widely used, for applications ranging from food packaging to automotive parts. ... [Pg.270]

Guilbert, S., Gontard, N. 2005. Agro-polymers for edible and biodegradable films Review of agricultural polymeric materials, physical and mechanical characteristics. In Innovations in Food Packaging, Han, J.H. (ed.). Elsevier Academic Press, Oxford, U.K., pp. 263-276. [Pg.829]

Packaging is the biggest polymer processing industry with the food sector being its principal customer. The materials used for this application often have short service time but end up mostly in landfills and stay there for over 100 years [1-5]. Cheap and biodegradable polymeric products are increasingly used in this... [Pg.899]
