Polymer mechanical strength

Polymer-based rocket propellants are generally referred to as composite propellants, and often identified by the elastomer used, eg, urethane propellants or carboxy- (CTPB) or hydroxy- (HTPB) terrninated polybutadiene propellants. The cross-linked polymers act as a viscoelastic matrix to provide mechanical strength, and as a fuel to react with the oxidizers present. Ammonium perchlorate and ammonium nitrate are the most common oxidizers used nitramines such as HMX or RDX may be added to react with the fuels and increase the impulse produced. Many other substances may be added including metallic fuels, plasticizers, stabilizers, catalysts, ballistic modifiers, and bonding agents. Typical components are Hsted in Table 1. [Pg.32]

Content of Ot-Olefin. An increase in the a-olefin content of a copolymer results in a decrease of both crystallinity and density, accompanied by a significant reduction of the polymer mechanical modulus (stiffness). Eor example, the modulus values of ethylene—1-butene copolymers with a nonuniform compositional distribution decrease as shown in Table 2 (6). A similar dependence exists for ethylene—1-octene copolymers with uniform branching distribution (7), even though all such materials are, in general, much more elastic (see Table 2). An increase in the a-olefin content in the copolymers also results in a decrease of their tensile strength but a small increase in the elongation at break (8). These two dependencies, however, are not as pronounced as that for the resin modulus. [Pg.396]

Pyrotechnic mixtures may also contain additional components that are added to modify the bum rate, enhance the pyrotechnic effect, or serve as a binder to maintain the homogeneity of the blended mixture and provide mechanical strength when the composition is pressed or consoHdated into a tube or other container. These additional components may also function as oxidizers or fuels in the composition, and it can be anticipated that the heat output, bum rate, and ignition sensitivity may all be affected by the addition of another component to a pyrotechnic composition. An example of an additional component is the use of a catalyst, such as iron oxide, to enhance the decomposition rate of ammonium perchlorate. Diatomaceous earth or coarse sawdust may be used to slow up the bum rate of a composition, or magnesium carbonate (an acid neutralizer) may be added to help stabilize mixtures that contain an acid-sensitive component such as potassium chlorate. Binders include such materials as dextrin (partially hydrolyzed starch), various gums, and assorted polymers such as poly(vinyl alcohol), epoxies, and polyesters. Polybutadiene mbber binders are widely used as fuels and binders in the soHd propellant industry. The production of colored flames is enhanced by the presence of chlorine atoms in the pyrotechnic flame, so chlorine donors such as poly(vinyl chloride) or chlorinated mbber are often added to color-producing compositions, where they also serve as fuels. [Pg.347]

Nail hardeners have been based on various proteia cross-linking agents. Only formaldehyde is widely used commercially. Contact with skin and inhalation must be avoided to preclude sensiti2ation and other adverse reactions. The popularity of products of this type is decreasiag because the polymers used ia nail elongators can be used to coat nails to iacrease the mechanical strength. [Pg.300]

Cost rules out almost all alternative materials for long-distance pipe lines it is much cheaper to build and protect a mild steel pipe than to use stainless steel instead - even though no protection is then needed. The only competing material is a polymer, which is completely immune to wet corrosion of this kind. City gas mains are now being replaced by polymeric ones but for large diameter transmission lines, the mechanical strength of steel makes it the preferred choice. [Pg.234]

The polymers which have stimulated the greatest interest are the polyacetylenes, poly-p-phenylene, poly(p-phenylene sulphide), polypyrrole and poly-1,6-heptadiyne. The mechanisms by which they function are not fully understood, and the materials available to date are still inferior, in terms of conductivity, to most metal conductors. If, however, the differences in density are taken into account, the polymers become comparable with some of the moderately conductive metals. Unfortunately, most of these polymers also have other disadvantages such as improcessability, poor mechanical strength, instability of the doped materials, sensitivity to oxygen, poor storage stability leading to a loss in conductivity, and poor stability in the presence of electrolytes. Whilst many industrial companies have been active in their development (including Allied, BSASF, IBM and Rohm and Haas,) they have to date remained as developmental products. Whilst the conductivity of these polymers is generally somewhat inferior to that of metals (for example, the electrical conductivity of polyacetylenes has reached more than 400 000 S/cm compared to values for copper of about 600 000 S/cm), when comparisons are made on the basis of equal mass the situation may be reversed. Unfortunately, most of the polymers also display other disadvantages such as improcessability, poor mechanical strength, poor stability under exposure to common environmental conditions, particularly at elevated temperatures, poor storage stability leading to a loss in conductivity and poor stability in the presence of electrolytes. In spite of the involvement of a number of important companies (e.g. Allied, BASF, IBM and Rohm and Haas) commercial development has been slow however, some uses have begun to emerge. It is therefore instructive to review briefly the potential for these materials. [Pg.888]
