Disadvantages associated with some organic solvents include toxicity flammabiHty and explosion ha2ards sensitivity to moisture uptake, possibly leading to subsequent undesirable reactions with solutes low electrical conductivity relatively high cost and limited solubiHty of many solutes. The above TGA and elemental analysis studies are consistent with Van Krevelen s two step model for polymer charring (2) in which a polymer first rapidly decomposes at 500°C to fuel gases and a primary char residue characterized by modestly high hydrogen content. The company Polymer Char (Valencia, Spain) was created for developing fully automated PO characterization instruments. The first device, commerciahzed and patented in 1994, was the CRYSTAF, crystallization analysis fractionation, for the fast measurement of the chemical composition distribution (CCD) in PE, PP, copolymers, and blends. Next came the SEC (with a quadruple detector system) and then SEC/a-TREF and p-TREF instruments. The first commercial, fully automated cross-fractionating SEC/TREF apparatus for microstructure characterization of POs was described by Ortin et al. (2007). The instrument yields a bivariate distribution CCD by TREE fractionation and then SEC fraction analysis in a single run. The manufacture of thermosets begins with a fluid mixture of the two monomers. The fluid is first shaped and then polymerized, either by heating or by being mixed with an initiator. The product of the polymerization is a network of covalently bonded atoms that is a solid, even at high temperatures. When heated to high temperatures, thermoset polymers char and decompose, but they do not melt. [Pg.1223]

However, densely cross-linked plastics (thermosets) are sometimes deliberately used. Reasons tend to be nonmechanical increased solvent and swelling resistance, high-temperature resistance, and reduced flammability are cited. The last arises because the polymer chars rather than degrades with concomitant reduction of volatile (and flammable) components. The instrument was built by modifying the design of a TREF 300 unit (Polymer Char, Spain) which incorporates an oven used for sample preparation and a high precision TREF column oven. Other components are syringe pump, HPLC pump, high temperature isothermal oven (SEC oven) in which the injection valve, a multiposition selection valve and the SEC column set are placed.
