The demands on insulating materials in soil and fresh water are relatively low. Anodically evolved oxygen makes the use of aging-resistant insulating materials necessary. These consist of special types of rubber (neoprene) and stabilized plastics of polyethylene, and polyvinylchloride, as well as cast resins such as acrylate, epoxy, polyester resin and many others. 

Among various rubbery polymeric materials, a special polyester resin has been developed as a binder in view of its curing at ambient temperature, low viscosity (as a result of addition of vinyl monomers) without appreciable sedimentation of explosives. A wide variety of special durable surface treatments have been used on manufactured fibers. These include treatments for imparting such characteristics as soil resistance, antistatic behavior, and wearer comfort through moisture wicking and transport. Fiber finishes also have been used successfully in promoting adhesion between two materials, as, for example, between polyester tire cord and rubber, and between glass fiber and polyester resin. 

The high cost of resins used in the production of polymer concrete (PC) makes the material expensive relative to cement-based materials. Not surprisingly, a recent survey ranked lower cost resins as the most important future need for PC [1], Recently, some work has been done on the production of unsaturated polyester resins based on recycled poly (ethylene terephthalate), PET [2], The PET wastes are typically found in used beverage bottles, and many states have passed legislation to collect and recycle these bottles. If specially formulated, the unsaturated polyester could be used in the production of PC [3],... 

RubCon can be used in specialized structures instead of traditional building materials (reinforced concrete, steel, wood). Comparison of technical and economic parameters of RubCon with the most widespread kinds of corrosion-resistant concretes, in particular polymer concrete based on epoxy and polyester resins, showed that the cost of a useful loading unit of the RubCon structure is more than twice as effective as epoxy polymer concrete and 2.2 times as effective as polyester polymer concrete. 

Unsaturated low molecular weight (M between 1000 and 10000), often branched, used as macromonomers for synthesis of thermosets (polyester resins), or thermosetting materials by themselves (alkyd resins). They are prepared from several monomers, namely phthalic and maleic anhydrides, adipic acid, iso-phthalic acid, natural fatty acids or triglycerides, and a great variety of multifunctional alcohols. In a few special cases, they may be saturated and/or linear for use as macromonomers in the production of polyurethanes or other polymers. 

Unsaturated polyester resins can be formulated to be hard and brittle, tough and resilient, or soft and flexible. By the appropriate choice of intermediates, particularly to form the linear unsaturated resin, special properties can be built into the resin system. As pointed out earlier (Table 12.2), the starting materials used with MA in polyesterifications have different effects upon the extent of isomerization of maleate to fumarate, and this in turn has a strong influence upon the final properties of the cured materials, As shown in Table 12.2, the percentage of fumarate increases considerably as more sterically hindered glycols or aromatic acids are used in the formulations. ...
