Polycystic ovarian disease

Purified FSH is used to prepare follicles for in vitro fertilization because LH activity in menotropins may cause premature ovulation. Purified FSH is also used to treat infertility in women with polycystic ovarian disease in this disease LH and androgen production may already be elevated. 

The excretion profile of estrogens in menstruating women with normal cycles is reflected in either plasma estradiol-17 S or urinary levels. However, with clinical problems such as polycystic ovarian disease, the extraovarian production of estrogens is best evaluated using urine specimens.

Polycystic ovarian disease (Stein-Leventhal syndrome)... 

Polycystic ovarian disease. This is indicated by an elevated LH and normal F.SH. Oestradiol measurements are often unhelpful. Hirsutism, a feature of this condition, is associated with raised testosterone and subnormal. sex hormone binding protein concentrations. 

GnRH is nsed in females to treat hypothalamic amenorrhea. A deficit in the synthesis of GnRH has been implicated as the source of menstrual disturbances, hypoprolactinemia, anorexia nervosa, stress- and weight-loss-associated amenorrhea, athletes amenorrhea, some forms of the polycystic ovarian disease syndrome, and infertility associated with hypothalamic tumors (see Table 15). 

In polycystic ovarian disease, both of the generally enlarged ovaries contain many small follicular cysts (2-6 mm), but larger cysts may also be present. Polycystic ovarian syndrome (Stein-Leventhal syndrome) is characterized by the association of polycystic ovaries with irregular menses, prolonged uterine bleeding, amenorrhea, anovulation, and often hirsutism and obesity. The clinical manifestation of this syndrome begins at or shortly after puberty. 

Other clinical uses for the gonadal suppression provided by continuous GnRH agonist treatment include advanced breast and ovarian cancer thinning of the endometrial lining in preparation for an endometrial ablation procedure in women with dysfunctional uterine bleeding and treatment of amenorrhea and infertility in women with polycystic ovary disease. 

Primary modern uses Anorexia, benign prostatic hyperplasia, irritable bladder, abacterial prostatitis with a mucus discharge, immune deficiency, laryngitis, dysuria, female hirsutism, cystitis with irritation and tenesmic pain, ovarian and uterine pain, polycystic ovary disease, chronic bronchial irritation, mild asthmatic chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, pelvic congestion, chronic irritative cough. 

Magnetic resonance (MR) imaging is suitable for assessing female infertility, as infertility typically results from benign processes in women of reproductive age. The causes of female infertility include ovulatory disorders (i.e., pituitary adenoma and polycystic ovarian syndrome), disorders of the fallopian tubes (i.e., hydrosalpinx and pelvic inflammatory disease), uterine disorders (i.e.,mullerian duct anomaly, aden-omyosis, and leiomyoma), and pelvic endometriosis.
