Polycyclic organic matter, POM

Coal-derived synthetic liquid fuels are potentially attractive substitutes for imported oils. Coal-derived liquids, however, have a tendency to form excessive amounts of soot and to produce high N0X emission levels during combustion compared to distillate oils (1). Polycyclic organic matter (POM) may also be enhanced along with the soot formation. [Pg.76]

Recently, the application of short term bio-assays to a variety of emission and ambient particulate samples has demonstrated that other compounds than PAH, most likely PAH-derivatives, can be responsable for a major part of the observed biological activity of the extracts. These results have forced us to widen our interest to the field of particulate polycyclic organic matter (POM), which besides hetero-atomic PAH (polycyclic aromatic compounds, PAC, containing nitrogen or sulfur) may also contain oxidized, nitrated, or sulfonated derivatives of PAH, formed in exhausts, emission stacks, plumes or during transport through the atmosphere. [Pg.328]

Reductions of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) which are ozone-forming constituents, must only be met in the summertime. However, the emission requirements for air toxics applies year-round. The definition of air toxics includes benzene, 1,3 butadiene, polycyclic organic matter (POM), formaldehyde and acetaldehyde. [Pg.149]

Although the ultimate source of much of particulate organic matter (POM) in the urban aerosol appears to be fossil fuel a specific knowledge of the amounts and classes of organic compounds contributed by various types of sources is lacking. Estimates of source contributions have been based on emission inventories which have been largely directed toward polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and/or benzo(a)pyrene. There has been very little work on the development of mathematical and statistical models for POM source identification and allocation (1). In view... [Pg.197]
