Poly stress-strain relations

Nematic monodomains have been prepared using a variant of the method introduced by Kiipfer and Finkelmann [10, 18] instead of keeping the stress constant in the second crosslinking step the strain was held constant in the second crosslinking step [53]. As for the case studied by Kupfer and Finkelmann, it is found that the monodomain character is retained after heating the sample into the isotropic phase upon return into the nematic phase. Differential dynamic measurements have also been made with other kinds of oscillating deformations. In studies by Painter of small dynamic shear deformations superimposed on large static shear strains in the same direction, the dynamic storage modulus G of cross-linked natural rubber and poly(dimethyl sil-oxane) at 24 Hz was found to increase with increasing static strains in excess of 721 = 0.2. Here 721 is defined as u jxt in the notation of Chapter 1. After a history of large static strain, however, the change in G with static strain in a second (and subsequent) sequence of experiments was much smaller. One way to obtain long-term information is through the use of the time-temperature-superposition principle detailed in Chapter 7. Indeed, J. Lohr, (1965) (the California wine maker) while at the NASA Ames Research Center conducted constant strain rate tests from 0.003 to 300 min and from 15° C above the glass transition temperature to 100° C below the glass transition temperature to produce yield stress master curves for poly(methyl methacrylate), polystyrene, polyvinyl chloride, and polyethylene terephthalate. It should not be surprising that time or rate dependent yield (rupture) stress master curves can be developed as yield (rupture) is a single point on a correctly determined isochronous stress-strain curve. Whether linear or nonlinear, the stress is related to the strain through a modulus function at the yield point (mpture) location. As a result, a time dependent master curve for yield, rupture, or other failure parameters should be possible in the same way that a master curve of modulus is possible as demonstrated in Chapter 7 and 10. [Pg.393]

Another motivation for measurement of the microhardness of materials is the correlation of microhardness with other mechanical properties. For example, the microhardness value for a pyramid indenter producing plastic flow is approximately three times the yield stress, i.e. // 3T (Tabor, 1951). This is the basic relation between indentation microhardness and bulk properties. It is, however, only applicable to an ideally plastic solid showing no elastic strains. The correlation between H and Y is given in Fig. 1.1 for linear polyethylene (PE) and poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) samples with different morphologies. The lower hardness values of 30-45 MPa obtained for melt-crystallized PE materials fall below the /// T cu 3 value, which may be related to a lower stiff-compliant ratio for these lamellar structures (BaM Calleja, 1985b). Piezoelectricity links the fields of electricity and acoustics. Piezoelectric materials are key components in acoustic transducers such as microphones, loudspeakers, transmitters, burglar alarms and submarine detectors. The Curie brothers [7] in 1880 first observed the phenomenon in quartz crystals. Langevin [8] in 1916 first reported the application of piezoelectrics to acoustics. He used piezoelectric quartz crystals in an ultrasonic sending and detection system - a forerunner to present day sonar systems. Subsequently, other materials with piezoelectric properties were discovered. These included the crystal Rochelle salt [9], the ceramics lead barium titanate/zirconate (pzt) and barium titanate [10] and the polymer poly(vinylidene fluoride) [11]. Other polymers such as nylon 11 [12], poly(vinyl chloride) [13] and poly (vinyl fluoride) [14] exhibit piezoelectric behavior, but to a much smaller extent. Strain constants characterize the piezoelectric response. These relate a vector quantity, the electrical field, to a tensor quantity, the mechanical stress (or strain). In this convention, the film orientation direction is denoted by 1, the width by 2 and the thickness by 3. Thus, the piezoelectric strain constant dl3 refers to a polymer film held in the orientation direction with the electrical field applied parallel to the thickness or 3 direction. The requirements for observing piezoelectricity in materials are a non-symmetric unit cell and a net dipole movement in the structure. There are 32-point groups, but only 30 of these have non-symmetric unit cells and are therefore capable of exhibiting piezoelectricity. Further, only 10 out of these twenty point groups exhibit both piezoelectricity and pyroelectricity.
