The carboxylic groups of mesoporphyrin-lX 15 b) and mesohemin-IX 15 c) were converted into isocyanate groups 15 d, e). The reaction with hydroxji group containing crosslinked polymers like poly(2-hydroxyethylmethacrylate) or sephadex (with hydroxy-propyl groups) in pyridine at room temperature led to fixed porjAyrins 20 a, b). [Pg.63]

The reaction can be used to introduce chromophores onto the surface of polymeric films containing hydroxy groups. When a poly(2-hydroxyethylmethacrylate) (PHEMA) film 14 was immersed in an acetonitrile solution of dimethyl terephthalate (DMTP) and l-methyl-2-arylcy-clopropane 13 (where the aryl group is 1-pyrenyl or 9-phenanthryl) and then irradiated at 313nm, a chemically modified film 15 was obtained that gives absorption and fluorescence spectra similar to 13, and therefore may be useful as a photocatalyst, photochromic device etc. - ... [Pg.2376]

Thus, particles with a very narrow distribution were observed - in the case of a second generation dendrimer, nanoparticles with a monodisperse nucleus of 2.4 0.2 nm. It is important that not only individual dendrimers can be used for metallopolymer preparation, but also their dispersed mixtures with polymer matrices, which form new types of polymer-inorganic nanomaterials. For example, the highest poly(amidoamide) generations in water were put in swollen polymeric patterns of poly(2-hydroxyethylmethacrylate) Cu, Au or ions of a complex bound to dendrimer [90] were added to such a composition. Reduction of the metal ions resulted in new types of inorganic hybrid materials. [Pg.349]

Crosslinked poly(2-hydroxyethylmethacrylate), PHEMA, has been prepared by radical polymerization in presence of different amounts of water and water-diacetine solutions. While homogeneous samples can be prepared at all water-diacetine content, amounts of water higher than 40% causes the formation of macroporous opaque sponges. Mechanical properties of water swollen samples have been measured and related to the crosslink formation during the polymerization process. From water diffusion kinetics in sorption and desorption experiments at 37 C the diffusion coefficients have been calculated. Measurements of the swelling at equilibrium in water-diacetine mix-res indicate the presence of "cosolvency" phenomenon for the samples studied. [Pg.311]

The results reported in this work showed that mechanical and transport properties of Poly-2-hydroxyethylmethacrylate are strongly affected by the composition of the reaction mixture, and in particular by the ratio water/diacetine. It has been shown that it is possible, using different types and amounts of additives, to obtain a wide range of physical properties of swollen PHEMA as required for various biomedical applications. Moreover, the spongy samples could be of interest in the design of biomedical implants whose morphology is characterized by porous structure with very high water contents. [Pg.320]

Photoresponsive gels based on the photon mode work by cis-trans photoisomerism of photochromic molecules like azobenzene or by photoionization of triphenylmethanelqyco. Ishihara et al. found that poly(2-hydroxyethylmethacrylate) gel shrinks upon ultraviolet irradiation after equilibrium swelling is reached in water [33]. They fiirther found that this gel swells again upon irradiation by visible light. Azobenzene isomerizes... [Pg.689]

Swelling experiments have been used to determine the crosslink density of water swollen poly(vinyl alcohol) and poly(2-hydroxyethylmethacrylate) gels [28]. However, this method Is less valuable for water absorbent polymers than It is for organic systems. First of all, obtaining a meaningful value of aqueous systems is difficult due to weaknesses in the theory for systems with extensive hydrogen bonding. If Xi is used... [Pg.117]
