Nguyen and Kausch [1984] found that the presence of phenyl groups in poly(styrene-co-acrylo-nitrile), SAN, protects PMMA in the blend, during radiolysis (Table 11.9). SAN and PMMA were dissolved in dimethyl formamide, 50- J,m-thick films were cast, and then dried under vacuum. Transparent bar specimens were compression-molded from the film. Mixing the polymers by co-precipitation from methanol resulted in opaque samples. Gamma irradiations were done in evacuated and sealed glass tubes, at a dose rate of 3 kGy/h. Comparison of freshly irradiated samples with irradiated and annealed ones showed the absence of any post-irradiation effects. [Pg.838]

Figure 10 shows the O NMR spectra of poly(isoprene) gamma irradiated in the presence of O-enriched oxygen. The authors have identified classes of peaks through comparison with model compounds it is conceivable that in future a database of O chemical shifts will aid researchers in this area. The authors were able to show that irradiation of poly(isoprene) in oxygen results in the formation largely of alcohols and ethers from hydrogen abstraction and termination reactions, respectively, of alkoxy radicals. These radicals are products of homolysis of hydroperoxy radicals. [Pg.30]

Poly(vinyl alcohol), or PVAL, is the polymer that was used for this purpose. It is a neutral, partially water-soluble polymer (43,44) that is generally considered to be biocompatible and nontoxic (45-47). Its structure is shown in Figure 3B. PVAL has been used as a matrix for entrapment of several enzymes in gels formed by gamma irradiation of aqueous solutions of polymer/enzyme mixtures (45,48-50). In some of our experiments, allyl methacrylate (AM) was added to the polymer to facilitate cross-linking at lower doses. [Pg.91]
