As with poly(ethylene terephthalate) there is particular interest in glass-fibre-filled grades. As seen from Table 25.8, the glass has a profound effect on such properties as flexural modulus and impact strength whilst creep resistance is also markedly improved. [Pg.725]

Ethylene copolymers were compared with liquid plasticisers for use as additives to improve the flexibility of poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) for electrical cable insulation applications. The PVCs were assessed by determining smoke generation, flammability, tensile properties and the low temperature brittle point. The ethylene copolymers gave similar peak heat release rates, but the peak smoke and the total smoke generation were lower. They also gave similar or increased strength, similar elongation and flexural modulus, and lower brittle point temperatures. 4 refs. [Pg.97]

A preliminary screening indicated that excellent impact could be obtained using 15-20 wt % butadiene based on the total polymer blend. At 20 wt % butadiene, several block polymers were screened for optimum impact and overall balance of properties. Two-component systems (block polymer-polystyrene) and three-component systems (block poly-mer-polybutadiene-polystyrene) were tried. The impact varied with the styrene content of the block polymer in both two- and three-component systems as shown in Figure 1. Subsequent work showed that the best overall balance of impact, flexural modulus, and heat distortion was obtained at 15% butadiene. [Pg.243]

Poly(butylene succinate-co-adipate)/PLA Blends Poly(butylene succinate adipate), poly(butylene succinate-co-adipate), or poly(butylene succinate-co-butyl-ene adipate) (PBSA) is a random aliphatic copolyester comprised of 1,4-butanediol, succinic acid, and adipic acid [157]. PBSA has lower thermal properties (Tg of —45°C, Tc of 50-53°C, I m of 93-95°C, crystallinity of 20-35%, and HDT at 0.45 MPa of 69°C), more flexibility (tensile strength of 34 7 MPa, tensile elongation of 400-900%, and flexural modulus of 323-340 MPa), and a faster biodegradation rate than PBS [142, 157]. PBSA/PLA blends are immiscible, and a complicated cocontinuous phase (domains of the other polymers dispersed in each continuous phase) was observed... [Pg.252]

The other properties of the homopolymer of PMS are similar to those of polystyrene, with the exception of the flexural modulus, where poly-PMS is 8% less stiff and the hardness is slightly higher. Both homopolymers are highly transparent, the haze being under 5%. [Pg.233]

Wood-poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) composites have higher flexural modulus than PVC alone. The improvement of the mechanical properties is always desirable for composite materials, and it will lead to more durable materials requiring less maintenance. The properties can be improved by the use of a compatibilizer. [Pg.225]
