Axial fans are classified as propeller, tube-axial, and vane-axial (Fig. 9). The choice of fan requited is determined by the resistance (static pressure) the fan must work against as well as the volume flow requited. PtopeUet fans usually discharge iato a plenum or directly iato the atmosphere. Tube-axial fans are usually mounted ia ducts as ia an air conditioning system. Vane-axial fans are also mounted ia ducts but feature a stationary guide vane on the discharge side that straightens the air flow to improve efficiency. Tube-axial fans can work at static pressures up to 623 Pa (2.5 ia. H2O) vane-axial fans can work up to 2000 Pa (8 ia. H2O). 

A generic multipurpose fluidized bed is illustrated in Figure 2 (1). The soHds are contained in a vessel and gas is introduced into the system via a distributor, which is typically a drilled plate at the bottom of the vessel. A plenum chamber is provided below the distributor plate. The height of the soHds level above the distributor is called the bed height, and the vertical space above the bed height is called the freeboard. A splash zone may exist as a transition between the bed and freeboard. Cyclones, located either in the freeboard or external to the vessel, are used to remove soHds from the gas stream. Diplegs can return entrained soHds directly to the bed.

Other organi2ations have assumed important positions in the field of patent documentation. IFl/Plenum Data Corp. (formerly Information for Industry) began in 1955 to index U.S. chemical patents by the Uniterm Index system. Uniterm indexing was eventually extended back to 1950. The acquisition in 1971 of Du Font s in-house indexing system and staff resulted in a more powerful system, the Comprehensive Data Base (CDB), which now covers U.S. chemical patents frommid-1964 to date.

Components in which water temperature changes abruptly with distance, such as heat exchangers, tend to accumulate precipitates. Heater surfaces also accumulate precipitates if the dissolved species have inverse temperature solubilities. Systems in which pH excursions are frequent may accumulate deposits due to precipitation processes. Plenum regions, such as heat exchanger headboxes, tend to collect deposits.
