Another variation of the string discharge is the use of a thick plastic belt which is perforated by conical openings. The dmm is covered with filter cloth and the belt covers the cloth for the filtration and dewatering operations. The soHds fill the perforations in the belt and then leave the dmm with the belt to be discharged by air blow as pellets. This is an effective way of pelletising coarse mineral ores. [Pg.397]

Physical and ionic adsorption may be either monolayer or multilayer (12). Capillary stmctures in which the diameters of the capillaries are small, ie, one to two molecular diameters, exhibit a marked hysteresis effect on desorption. Sorbed surfactant solutes do not necessarily cover ah. of a sohd iaterface and their presence does not preclude adsorption of solvent molecules. The strength of surfactant sorption generally foUows the order cationic > anionic > nonionic. Surfaces to which this rule apphes include metals, glass, plastics, textiles (13), paper, and many minerals. The pH is an important modifying factor in the adsorption of all ionic surfactants but especially for amphoteric surfactants which are least soluble at their isoelectric point. The speed and degree of adsorption are increased by the presence of dissolved inorganic salts in surfactant solutions (14). [Pg.236]

Plastic laminated sheets produced in 1913 led to the formation of the Formica Products Company and the commercial introduction, in 1931, of decorative laminates consisting of a urea—formaldehyde surface on an unrefined (kraft) paper core impregnated with phenoHc resin and compressed and heated between poHshed steel platens (8,10). The decorative surface laminates are usually about 1.6 mm thick and bonded to wood (a natural composite), plywood (another laminate), or particle board (a particulate composite). Since 1937, the surface layer of most decorative laminates has been fabricated with melamine—formaldehyde, which can be prepared with mineral fiUers, thus offering improved heat and moisture resistance and allowing a wide range of decorative effects (10,11). [Pg.3]

Applicability Most hazardous waste slurried in water can be mixed directly with cement, and the suspended solids will be incorporated into the rigid matrices of the hardened concrete. This process is especially effective for waste with high levels of toxic metals since at the pH of the cement mixture, most multivalent cations are converted into insoluble hydroxides or carbonates. Metal ions also may be incorporated into the crystalline structure of the cement minerals that form. Materials in the waste (such as sulfides, asbestos, latex and solid plastic wastes) may actually increase the strength and stability of the waste concrete. It is also effective for high-volume, low-toxic, radioactive wastes. [Pg.180]

Moisture Deteriorating effects of moisture are well known as reviewed early in this chapter (OTHER BEHAVIOR, Drying Plastic). Examples for high moisture applications include polyphenylene oxide, polysulfone, acrylic, butyrate, diallyl phthalate, glass-bonded mica, mineral-filled phenolic, chlorotrifluoroethylene, vinylidene, chlorinated polyether chloride, vinylidene fluoride, and fluorocarbon. Polyethylene and polystyrene are examples of plastics subject to environmental stress cracking. Crack resistance tests have shown that surfactants, alcohols, organic acids, vegetable and mineral oils, and ethers provide an active environment for stress cracking of polyethylene. Table 6 lists typical sterile devices and plastic materials used to fabricate them, while Tables 7-9 list the potential effects of sterilization processes on polymeric materials.
