Dewatering operations

Another variation of the string discharge is the use of a thick plastic belt which is perforated by conical openings. The dmm is covered with filter cloth and the belt covers the cloth for the filtration and dewatering operations. The soHds fill the perforations in the belt and then leave the dmm with the belt to be discharged by air blow as pellets. This is an effective way of pelletising coarse mineral ores. 

Other applications Desliming—Removal of extremely fine particles from a wet material hy passing it over a screening surface. Conveying—In some instances transport of the material may he as important as the operation. Media r ecovery—A comhination washing and dewatering operation.

Another possible way to further reduce the cost of ownership of a waste treatment system with this configuration is to forward the concentrated slurry stream to a common filter press if there are various dewatering operations (such as those used for a fluoride waste treatment system or other CMP waste streams) that exist within the facility. Since the liquid in the concentrated slurry does not contain trace metals, this stream can then be reclaimed, recycled, or discharged to sewer rather than re-processed from the start of the system. 

Table 7 shows the expected characteristics for sidestreams from typical thickening and dewatering operations as applied to the conditioned sludge. 

Primary Sludge Primary sludge is generated during primary wastewater treatment, which removes those solids that settle out readily. Primary sludge contains 2-8% solids usually thickening or other dewatering operations can easily reduce its water content.

Dewatering technologies can be subdivided into two general processes air drying processes and mechanical processes. This chapter provides an overview of these technologies and concentrates on typical sludge dewatering operations used for wastewater treatment. 

In addition to the effluent limitations and the processes shown in Table 24 the degree of reduction in heavy metals waste loadings should consider the sludge handling and disposal methods used for the metal finishing wastewaters. Some processes (e.g., anaerobic digestion) concentrate these metals, and this can lead to process failure unless adequate pretreatment is provided. Dewatering operations discussed in Chapter 7 should be referred to.
