Zeolite/polymer mixed-matrix membranes prepared from crosslinked polymers and surface-modified zeolite particles offered both outstanding separation properties and swelling resistance for some gas and vapor separations such as purification of natural gas. Hillock and coworkers reported that crosslinked mixed-matrix membranes prepared from modified SSZ-13 zeolite and 1,3-propane diol crosslinked polyimide (6FDA-DAM-DABA) synthesized from 2,2 -feis-(3,4-dicarboxyphenyl)hexafluoropropane dianhydride, p-dimethylaminobenzylamine-and 3,5-diaminobenzoic acid displayed high CO2/CH4 selectivities of up to 47 Barrer and CO2 permeabilities of up to 89 Barrer under mixed gas testing conditions [71]. Additionally, these crosslinked mixed-matrix membranes were resistant to CO2 plasticization up to 450 psia (3100kPa). [Pg.341]

Important factors regarding incoming adherends are the chemical and physical properties of the material. This can be especially important with adhesive bonding because different metal alloys have different surface oxidation, and different elastomers and plastics can have different additives and modifiers. With elastomeric and plastic substrates, lot-to-lot differences should be tested. Often a supplier will change formulations but still be within the requirements of the specification. The substituted phenols and cresols constitute about half the total volume of this group. Para-t-butylphenol is produced by the alkylation of phenol with isobutylene. The principal applications for this derivative are in the manufacture of modified phenolic resins for the rubber industry and in surface coatings. BHT is obtained from isobutylene and p-cresol. Technical-grade BHT is an antioxidant for plastics and elastomers, and is a gum inhibitor in gasoline. Food-grade BHT is an antioxidant in edible oils, preserves, and many other foods. 2,6-Di-t-butylphenol is used to produce a wide range of plastics additives, antioxidants, and gasoline additives. [Pg.389]

To overcome these problems, polymer films are modified with antifogging additives. The modified plastic films do not prevent the formation of condensation per se. However, while water vapor condenses on such films, antifogging additives migrate to the surface of the film, causing the condensation to spread evenly over the film s surface and run off instead of forming droplets (2, pp. 609-626). [Pg.128]

This approach was borrowed from the conventional bulk modification of thermal plastics, by bulky blending a few amounts of other molecules (additives) into the plastic matrix to modify some performance of plastics [7]. For example, to increase the flowability of melt thermal plastics in hot embossing or injection, plasticizers such as dibutyl phtha-late are often added in the thermal plastics. Some of them will appear on the surface and further change the properties of the target surface (Figure 10.2a).
