Plan development management style

This sample is designed to summarize the key steps in the process a centralized company or division plans to follow in developing PSM. Note that the primary difterences indicated relate to reporting requirements and timeframe the process components remain the same regardless of organizational structure or management style. [Pg.34]

There are at least two approaches for defining the order of the activities. The first is the "plan for success" approach in which as many activities as possible are conducted in parallel to provide the shortest time path to the Go/No-Go decisions (proof of mechanism/ proof of concept/ etc.) and to the project completion. The second approach is used when there are very scarce resources or when there is a low probability of project success. This second approach defers expensive activities until a proof of concept (POC) has been achieved for the project. Once the POC has been achieved/ then a plan-for-success-style development plan for the project will be developed and implemented. One can also stage the development of lower prioritized projects in a portfolio/ if resources are limited/ or if the risk is still high and the project needs to be managed more conservatively by the organization. [Pg.430]

Although the content of each SSPP should contain the same basic elements, not all SSPPs are identical or necessarily look alike (nor should they). Each plan is unique to the particular type, size, and safety-criticality of system involved it expresses the personality and management style for the organization developing the product. A tailored SSPP for a small project would normally look much different than a tailored plan for a large project. The SSPP for a non-safety-critical system would look different than one for an extremely safety-critical project. [Pg.424]

Recent disasters in Australia in different industries have prompted different regulatory responses. In the state of Victoria, a gas plant accident which disrupted supplies to the state for two weeks (Hopkins, 2000) has led to the introduction of a safety case regime, while in the state of Queensland, a coal mine explosion which killed eleven men (Hopkins, 1999) led to a requirement that mines develop principle hazard management plans. This paper looks at the characteristics of the two different styles of regulation, explores reasons for these different responses, and draws some tentative policy conclusions. [Pg.31]
