Furfuryl alcohol alone, or in combination with other cross-linkable binders such as phenoHc reins, chemical by-products and pitch, catalyzed with acid, gives carbon yields of 35—56%. Furfural together with cyclohexanone, pitch, or phenoHc resins gives, under acid catalysis, yields of 35—55% carbon under basic catalysis yields of 5—50% are achieved. FurfuryHdeneacetone resins (13 and 14), catalyzed by acid or base, give carbon yields of 48—56 and... [Pg.81]

There are three basic ways to achieve mechanical expression, ie, with an indatable diaphragm, with a compression belt, or in a screw conveyor of reducing pitch or diameter. [Pg.390]

A basic stirred tank design is shown in Fig. 23-30. Height to diameter ratio is H/D = 2 to 3. Heat transfer may be provided through a jacket or internal coils. Baffles prevent movement of the mass as a whole. A draft tube enhances vertical circulation. The vapor space is about 20 percent of the total volume. A hollow shaft and impeller increase gas circulation (as in Fig. 23-31). A splasher can be attached to the shaft at the hquid surface to improve entrainment of gas. A variety of impellers is in use. The pitched propeller moves the liquid axially, the flat blade moves it radially, and inclined blades move it both axially and radially. The anchor and some other designs are suited to viscous hquids. [Pg.2111]

Basically, two engaging gears are two cylinders of different diameter with teeth machined on their periphery (Fig. 29-82). A gear is defined by its basic diameter (pitch diameter), its width, the number of teeth, and the angle that the teeth make in respec t to the axis. [Pg.2539]

The three basic types of impeller which are used at high Reynolds numbers (low viscosity) are shown in Figures 10.55a, b, c. They can be classified according to the predominant direction of flow leaving the impeller. The flat-bladed (Rushton) turbines are essentially radial-flow devices, suitable for processes controlled by turbulent mixing (shear controlled processes). The propeller and pitched-bladed turbines are essentially axial-flow devices, suitable for bulk fluid mixing. [Pg.470]

Figures 1-3 demonstrate the effect of KOH/precursor ratio, reaction temperature and reaction time, respectively, on porous structure parameters of carbon produced by KOH activation. While the presented relationships concern mostly carbonaceous mesophase, basically they are typical of all coal and pitch-derived materials of the study. A pitch is made for a renewed, rigorous and systematic implementation of the GW method of Hedin and Lundquist for extended, periodic systems. Building on previous accurate Hartree-Fock calculations with Slater orbital basis set expansions, in which extensive use was made of Fourier transform methods, it is advocated to use a mixed Slater-orbital/plane-wave basis. Earher studies showed the amehoration of approximate linear dependence problems, while such a basis set also holds various physical and anal3ftical advantages. The basic formahsm and its realization with Fourier transform expressions is explained. Modem needs of materials by precise design, assisted by the enormous advances in computational capabilities, should make such a program viable, attractive and necessary. [Pg.36]

The fuel oils coming out of olefin plants are also characterized by an abundance of polynuclear aromatic molecules, (Same definition as for Figure 2—1). They are sometimes inaccurately referred to as having a high aromatics content. Nomenclature aside, because of this, the burning characteristics of pyrolysis gas oil and pyrolysis pitch are poor. They are smoky, sooty, and gum formers they rend to be more viscous, and because of their polynuclear aromatic concent, they are suspected carcinogens. They are basically a witchs brew of unsavory hydrocarbons.. ... [Pg.74]

Several designs of screws are shown in Figure 5.7. The basic design is one in which the pitch equals the diameter. Closer spacing is needed for carrying up steep inclines, and in fact very line pitch screws operating at the relatively high speeds of 350 rpm are used to convey vertically. The capacity of a standard pitch screws drops off sharply with the inclination, for example ... [Pg.76]

Figure 1.7 Overview of the basic transformations which are used in the development of the PAQM (Perceptual Audio Quality Measure). The signals x(t) and y t) are windowed with a window w(t) and then transformed to the frequency domain. The power spectra as function of time and frequency, Px (t, f) and Py(t, /) are transformed to power spectra as function of time and pitch, px(t, z) and py(t, z) which are convolved with the smearing function resulting in the excitations as a function of pitch Ex (/, z) ar 6Ey(t, z). After transformation with the compression function we get the internal representations x(f, z)and ,(, z) from which the average noise disturbance Cn over the audio fragment can be calculated. Fairbanks, Everitt and Jaeger s modified tape recorder [Fairbanks et al., 1954] is the simplest and oldest example of a pitch-independent time-domain time or pitch scaling system. Although Pitch independent methods are no longer used in practice, they offer a simple illustration of the basic principles underlying most of the more recent algorithms. [Pg.163]
