The earliest evidence for cannabis in Africa outside of Egypt comes from fourteenth-century Ethiopia, where two ceramic smoking-pipe bowls containing traces of cannabis were recently discovered during an archaeological excavation. From Ethiopia, cannabis seeds were carried to the south by Bantu-speaking natives who originally lived in North Africa, and from them the use of cannabis as an intoxicant spread to other native Africans such as the Bushmen and the Hottentots. [Pg.69]

Pipe bowls were made of various materials such as wood, stone, bone, or pottery, and were often fitted to a horn filled with water. [Pg.70]

The best replacement for borosilicate glassware is stainless steel. Stainless steel takes the heat, won t break, and, most importantly, is about as resistant to chemical degradation as the chemist can hope to find. For those items that won t be subjected to direct heat there can be some steel/metal or steel/plastic hybrids. In figure 3 is shown how flasks of any size can be made with two stainless steel mixing bowls welded together. Also shown is the vacuum adaptor and condenser. For the condenser only the inner pipe need be steel. The outside pipe can be copper or something. As for the other components of a distillation set up, well, they are made just as they look. [Pg.19]

The unit consists essentially of tvv o rotating elements, the outer being a solid-shell conical-shaped bowl and the inner comprising a helical-screw conveyor revolving at a speed slightly lovv er than that of the bowl. Raw feed sliiri v is delivered through a stationai"v feed pipe... [Pg.1780]

Ideally, the sample should be taken from a valve installed specifically for sampling. When sampling valves are not installed the taking of samples from locations where sediment or water can collect, such as dead ends of piping, tank drains, and low points of large pipes and filter bowls, should be avoided if possible. If samples are taken from pipe drains, sufficient fluid should be drained before the sample is taken to ensure that the sample actually represents the system. Samples are not to be taken from the tops of... [Pg.604]

Submersible turbine pumps are a variety of vertical turbine pumps with the motor attached below the pumping unit. Water passes in through an intake port located between the motor and bowl assembly, then upward through the bowl stages to the surface through the pump pipe. Electric power is supplied to the motor by specially insulated wires. Submersible turbine pumps are manufactured for water supply and oil well usage by a wide variety of manufactures in sizes ranging from /3 to several hundred horsepower, and are constructed of materials suited for many chemicals. [Pg.225]

Traditionally, opium is smoked with a pipe, typically around 20 inches long. Opium pipes are usually made of wood, and the type of wood used often denotes the wealth of the smoker. Poor smokers typically use pipes made from bamboo, while wealthier smokers may have pipes constructed of ebony. About three-quarters down the shaft of the pipe rests the bowl, a hollow structure that can be made of metal, porcelain, or clay, again depending on the quality of the pipe. The hollow pipe is sealed on one end and has an opening on the other, through which the user takes in the smoke. [Pg.47]

In addition to the pipe, serious smokers require a host of additional materials used to prepare and smoke opium. These include a container to hold the opium, a needle to clear the bowl opening, a lamp to ignite the opium, and a tray to hold all of the supplies. [Pg.47]

Jewelers and diamond cutters, however, were skeptical. To remove certain flaws, they had often heated diamonds, carefully packed in chalk dust and powdered charcoal, and had never experienced any loss. After several inconclusive experiments had been made by others, Maillard, a famous gem cutter, placed three diamonds, closely packed in charcoal dust, in the bowl of a tobacco pipe, and enclosed it in sheet iron inside a crucible filled with a lining of chalk dust and a fusible sand used for castings. After moistening the mixture with salt water and letting it dry, Maillard heated the crucible in Macquer s furnace. The contents soon became so fluid that it was necessary to allow the furnace to cool. [Pg.60]

A. The standardized salvinorin A enhanced leaf is very easy to use. Place the amount that you intend to use in the bowl of a small pipe. Since the leaf may be very finely crumbled, the pipe should be fitted with a fine-mesh screen in the bottom of the bowl to prevent small particals from getting into the pipe-stem and being inhaled. When you... [Pg.28]

The dried leaves may be smoked. A large-bowled pipe, like a tobacco pipe, is about right. Rolled cigarettes are less satisfactory, because it is difficult to get a deep lungful of the smoke. Hold the smoke in. One to three lungfuls are enough. [Pg.163]

The culprit turned out to be manure, all right, but of a decidedly human variety. The building s toilets connected to a septic tank, with the usual u-shaped trap built into the pipes. These traps are normally filled with water, which prevents any gas from backing up into the toilet bowl. Since septic tanks create the anaerobic conditions under which flammable methane can be generated, this is an essential safety measure. The toilets had not been used since the station was abandoned, and the water had evaporated from the plumbing system. Methane was now free to back up into the basement, and it had apparently done so. As the original investigator had proposed, a spark from the sump pump had probably set off the explosion. The bats had been falsely accused. [Pg.194]

All modem fillers are designed for clean-in-place (CIP) to ensure the sterility of the system. The CIP process operates from a centrally located system that is piped to the filler. A return cycle to the CIP set from the filler is included, the temperature of the return liquor being sensed at the filler outlet. Specifically designed CIP cups are attached to each filling valve to allow the CIP process to take place entirely through the filler bowl and filling valves and all associated... [Pg.177]

When the bowl has attained full speed set the valve to 3 and leave it so until water flows out through the indicator pipe. The bowl is now closed. [Pg.26]
