However, there are some potential effects of spilled oil on fish. The impacfs on fish are primarily to fhe eggs and larvae, wifh limited effecfs on fhe adulls. The sensitivity varies by species pink salmon fry are affected by exposure to water-soluble fractions of crnde oil, and pink salmon eggs are very tolerant to benzene and water-soluble petroleum. The general effects are difficnlt to assess and document quantitatively, dne to the seasonal and natural variability of the species. Fish rapidly metabolize aromatic hydrocarbons, due to their enzyme system. [Pg.116]

Recently, mutation spectrum of flower color and flower shape of carnation was also investigated by Okamura et al. [108]. In the carnation variety Vital (spray-type, cherry pink flowers with frilly petals) tested, flower color mutants such as pink, white, and red were obtained by X-ray irradiation, whereas the color spectrum of the mutants obtained by carbon ion irradiation was wide such as pink, light pink, salmon, red, yellow, and complex and striped types. Furthermore, many kinds of round shape of petals were induced in addition to flower colors. These indicate that ion beams can induce novel flower color and shape with high frequency. [Pg.848]

Fig. 2. DNA sequences across a homopolymer stretch in the control region of the mitochondrial genomes from two salmon. (A) Ten T residues in pink salmon (Oncorhynchus gorbuscha) and (B) 14 T residues in rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss). Lanes for each species are from left to right G, A, T, and C. Sequencing templates were prepared by asymmetric amplification directly from purified mitochondrial DNA. Sequencing reactions were performed with Sequenase and the products separated in 6% polyacrylamide, 7 M urea gels. Fig. 2. Apart from studying the incidence of neoplasia, many other markers have been applied in order to assess the exposure to genotoxins in wildlife species, such as DNA adducts, chromosomal aberrations, micronuclei, c-K-rav oncogenes, etc. Correlations between contaminant exposure and mutations in oncogenes have been examined in molluscs (Van Beneden, 1994). Pink salmon (Oncorhynchus gorbuscha) embryos exposed to crude oil were shown to have high frequencies of mutations in the K-ras oncogene (Roy et al., 1999). [Pg.247]
