Improvements in process and quality control made significant contributions to the transition from iron to steel as the major ferrous construction material over a century and a half ago. For most of that time red lead was relied upon, and not without a remarkable degree of success, as the rust-inhibitive pigment in anti-corrosive paints. In the last twenty years, however, there has been a similar dramatic change from such simple paints as red lead to synthetic polymer coatings which have as complex a technology as steel manufacture itself. 

The major use (60%) for coloured inorganic pigments, such as iron oxides, is in the construction materials industry. Here they are used to colour roof and flooring tiles, fibrous cement and mortar. Many inorganic pigments are used in coloured baking enamels for metal appliances. Chromium oxide is used in the refractory industry, not for its colour but because of its ability to improve the properties of bricks used in furnace linings. 

The metal oxides produced by thermal decomposition contain all the elements initially present in the raw material apart from the titanium, which has been converted into pigment. The mixture of metal oxides, mainly iron oxide, can be used as an additive in the construction materials or cement industry. 

There are considerable regional differences in the applications of iron oxide pigments. In Western Europe the construction materials sector is dominant, whereas in the USA it is the paint and coatings sector. 

Tn the construction materials colorant sector, the chemical stability, light fastness and weathering stability of synthetic iron oxide pigments are important. Concrete bricks, paving stones, roofing tiles, asbestos cement, mortar, bitumen and facade plaster are all currently colored with iron oxide pigments. 

The compositions of cathodic and anodic electrodeposition baths are given in Table 3.11. The main components are resins, pigments, extenders, some solvent, and neutralization agents. The latter are used to neutralize the charge on the resins so that they become water dispersible. The application data affect the plant and equipment technology (e.g., choice of construction materials, energy consumption, and rectifier design) [3.109], [3.117].

For absorbance values <0.3, one should try to concentrate the extract (e.g., by evaporation), make a new extract using more plant material and less solvent, or extract the pigments in a separatory funnel into a small volume of a hydrophobic solvent in the epiphase. Various spectrophotometers are constructed to measure absorbance (extinction) values only up to 1.0 (i.e., a transmittance of 10%). In such cases, an absorbance >0.85 is notsuitable, and the extract solution should be diluted to obtain valid Chi b and carotenoid values. In both cases, care must be taken to ensure that the final volume of the extract solution is carefully recorded and considered in the calculation of total Chls and carotenoids.
