For process water, steel pipes are used unless iron pickup is to be minimized. Plastic pipes (polyethylene and polyvinylchloride) are used but they sometimes need external protection from solvents present in industrial atmospheres, ultraviolet radiation (including sunlight), freezing and mechanical damage. [Pg.897]

The pickup, transport, and redeposition of corrosion debris and deposits can happen anywhere in steam distribution and condensate return systems and are not confined to any particular boiler plant size or pressure rating. Other cases of non-detector noise occur when the noise is introduced after the detector. These are usually a result of limitations of the instrument and in principle could be reduced by re-engineering the instrument. Examples include power line pickup, and mechanical vibrations affecting a sensitive part (generically called microphonics ). Two types of conductivity detectors exist the contact conductivity detector, where the electrodes are in direct contact with the electrolyte, and the contactless coupled conductivity detector (C D also called oscillometric detector). With this detector, two stainless-steel tubes that act as electrodes are mounted on a capillary at a certain distance from each other. By applying an oscillation frequency, a capacitive transition occurs between the actuator electrode and the liquid inside the capillary. After having passed the detection gap between the electrodes, a second capacitive transition between the electrolyte and the pickup electrode occurs (see Figures 7 and 8 which is an example of separation of cations). In different reviews, Zemann and Kuban and Hauser discuss the advantages of this technique which include rather simple mechanical parts and electronics, and Kuban et al. compared several C D detectors. This technique has also been used as a detector for analysis by microchip CE. C" D detectors are available to be mounted on existing CE instruments. [Pg.325]

Little change of viscosity makes silicone liquids indispensable damping devices and parts of various measuring devices. A drop of silicone liquid put on a pointer index in the cockpit prevents vibration and keeps the index at rest this kind of damping is more efficient than complicated mechanical devices. Silicone damping liquids are also used in speedometers, amperemeters, voltmeters and gasometers, in relays and breakers, in acoustic pickups. [Pg.469]

The success of the tap test depends on the skill and experience of the operator, the background noise level, and the type of structure. Some improvement in the tap test can be achieved by using a solenoid-operated hammer and a microphone pickup. The resulting electric signals can be analyzed on the basis of amplitude and frequency. However, the tap test, in its most successful mode, measures only the qualitative characteristics of the joint. It tells whether adhesive is in the joint or not, providing an acoustical path from substrate to substrate or it tells if the adhesive is undercured or filled with air, thereby causing a mechanically damped path for the acoustical signal. The tap test provides no quantitative information and no information about the presence and/or nature of a weak boundary layer. [Pg.433]

There are two main types of low wet picknp applicators. The first is the saturation-removal type where the fabric is completely satnrated with the finish liquid and then the excess liqnid is removed mechanically or with a vacnnm before drying. With the second type, a precise amount of finish liqnid is nniformly applied to the fabric using transfer roll, spray or foam techniqnes.
