Pickling mechanism

In some metal-forming operations such as rod and wire drawing, various surface treatments are appHed to the workpiece. These include descaling, cleaning the apphcation of lubricant carriers, and the use of lubricants (see Lubrication and lubricants). Descaling can be mechanical or chemical (pickling). [Pg.238]

Surface preparation may be required to remove oxides, moisture, grease, etc. Prior to welding they are removed by mechanical, pickl or degreasing processes, the application of which canbe an addedsouree of variability. [Pg.349]

Before steel strip or rod can be cold rolled, tinned, galvanised, or enamelled, etc. any scale formed on it by previous heat treatment must be removed. This can be done by mechanical and other special methods, but if a perfectly clean surface is to be produced, acid pickling is preferred, either alone or in conjunction with other pretreatment processes. [Pg.292]

A mechanism such as that given above provides explanations for the known effects of many process variables ". The reductive dissolution and undermining processes require access of the acid to the metal surface, hence the benefits obtained by the deliberate introduction of cracks in the oxide by cold-working prior to pickling. Also the increase in pickling rate with agitation or strip velocity can be explained in terms of the avoidance of acid depletion at the oxide-solution interface. [Pg.298]

Principles The process consists of tumbling the metal to be coated with a powder of the coating metal. It is considered that a form of welding is involved, but the type of conditions conducive to successful deposition indicates that the deposit adheres by mechanical keying (A/, must therefore be relatively soft) and adhesive forces. Thus pretreatments such as abrading or pickling enhance the keying effect, and the use of a soft metal... [Pg.437]

In certain tests it is sometimes desirable to eliminate any effects of a mechanically achieved surface condition by chemical treatment or pickling of the surface prior to test. This may be done in a pickling solution alternatively, the test itself may be interrupted after sufficient corrosion has occurred to remove the original surface, the specimen then being cleaned and reweighed and the test started over again. Wesley found it to be desirable to pickle off about 0-008 mm from the surface of specimens in acid to improve the reproducibility of the tests. [Pg.980]

Steel that has been hot-rolled and pickled may be cold-rolled immediately at ambient temperatures before further oxidation can occur. This is done to impart the desired mechanical and surface properties in the steel, and for cold working of the pipe and tube. The two main types of cold mill products are cold-rolled sheets/coils for sale or for further processing in galvanizing and coatings lines, and cold-rolled coils for subsequent tinning.1... [Pg.60]

In the hot dip process, the sheets or other articles to be coated must be free from scale, dirt, grease, etc., and arc usually prepared by pickling and washing before immersion in molten zinc commercially known as speller. Articles fabricated from iron and steel sheets and wire are hand-dipped. Sheets and wire are handled mechanically. [Pg.703]

The tectorial membrane rests at the top of the organ of Corti, and the basilar membrane forms the base. Two types of hair cells are found along the basilar membrane. There are three rows of outer hair cells and one row of inner hair cells. The outer hair cells form part of the mechanical system of the cochlear partition, while the inner hair cells provide transduction from mechanical motion into neural firing patterns. There are about 30,000 nerve fibers in the human ear. The vast majority are afferent fibers that conduct the inner hair cell neural pulses towards the brain approximately 20 fibers are connected to each of the 1,500 inner hair cells. Approximately 1,800 efferent fibers conduct neural pulses from the brain to the outer hair cells [Pickles, 1988],... [Pg.136]

In general, the evidence suggests that some types of diets and some dietary components (e.g., high fat diets or the frequent consumption of salt-cured, salt-pickled, and smoked foods) tend to be associated with an increased risk of cancer, whereas others (e.g., low fat diets or the frequent consumption of certain fruits and vegetables) are associated with a decreased risk. The mechanisms responsible for these effects are not fully understood. [Pg.21]
