Photovoltaic effect method

In addition to the illumination of the catalyst surface, another simple method is used for the alteration of the electron concentration and the occupation of the bond orbitals in the semiconductor surface. This method is a modification of the inverse mixed catalysts introduced by Schwab 89 9 . The electron concentration and distribution upon the bond states is achieved 1. by putting the surface bonds into the potential of a boundary layer of a metal-semiconductor junction and 2. by illumination of the semiconductor-metal junction with ultraviolet light (photovoltaic effect). [Pg.133]

Polythiophenes (PTs)/CNTs composites have emerged as an intriguing system for use as photovoltaic devices and field effect transistors [57]. Swager and Bao independently reported methods for the assembling of PTs/CNTs systems and showed their great potential as transparent conductive films [58]. For metal, dielectric and semiconductor films fabrication, optical and silica glass are popular substrate materials because of their availability, cost-effectiveness, and inert character, i.e., they are stable in the required temperature range for common photonic, optoelectronic and photovoltaic applications, they do not chemically react with the prepared films, and the hard plane surface makes the formation of optically smooth thin films fairly easy. Generally, it is preferable to form films by a simple, low-temperature, inexpensive and environment friendly method. Sol-gel technique and thermal evaporation is found suitable for the preparation of film parts of efficient solar cells [1], emitters, transformers [2], detectors and modulators of light [3], as well as optically stimulated luminescence dosimeters [4]. Photovoltaics also require significant research activity in the chemical sciences. Low-cost methods are required for producing solar-grade silicon for photovoltaic cells. Better solar cell materials are needed than the presently utilized amorphous silicon. These materials must be more efficient without the use of heavy metals such as cadmium, tellurium, indium, and lead, which present significant environmental issues. An understanding of the degradation process of photovoltaic cells is needed, as is an answer to why these materials lose their effectiveness after prolonged exposure to the sun. Finally, there is a need to develop catalysts for the efficient photochemical conversion of water. [Pg.32]
