Photo-mediated polymerizations

Kinetics and Mechanism. Practical applications of onium salt photo-initiated polymerization generally require use of spectral sensitizers. Under conditions of electron transfer mediated sensitization, the initiating cation, R+, thus derives from the sensitizer, not the onium salt (see above), that is, a Lewis, rather than a Bronsted, acid functions as the polymerization catalyst. As a result overall polymerization quantum yields are very dependent on sensitizer [93,166]. [Pg.346]

Ring-opening polymerization (ROP) has seen broad utility for synthesizing main-chain organometallic polymers. Initially reported by Rauchfuss [9], and thoroughly developed by Manners and coworkers [10], the transformation from 10 to 11 (Schane 1.4) has been optimized to include various conditions for polymerization such as thermal, anionic, photo, and metal-mediated polymerizations Both solution and solid-state polymerization have also been reported. Molecular weights on the order of 10 Da have been achieved and the ability to prepare monomers of varying functionahty has assisted... [Pg.5]

For SCVP of styrenic inimers, the mechanism includes cationic (14 [18], 19 [29]), atom transfer radical (15 [22, 27]), nitroxide-mediated radical (16 [21]), anionic (20 [19]), photo-initiated radical (17 [2], 18 [52-55]), and ruthenium-catalyzed coordinative (21 [56]) polymerization systems. Another example in-... [Pg.6]

This polymer was synthesized via NMRP (Nitroxide Mediated Radical Polymerization) (Benoit et al. 1999) by sequential polymerization of 2VP and a mixture of NIPAAm and DMIAAm. Using the macroinitiator method, the preparation of well-defined linear block copolymers consisting of a homo polymer block P2VP (pH-sensitive) and a random copolymer block of PNlPAAm (temperamre sensitive) with DMIAAm (photo crosslinker) was possible. [Pg.173]

In addition to conformational studies of RLPs, multiple groups have studied the mechanical properties of cross-linked RLPs. As mentioned above, Elvin et al. successfully expressed RLPs in E. coU in soluble form in 2005. This recombinant RLP was cross-linked via Ru(II)-mediated photochemical protocols to establish the formation of dityrosine cross-links in order to produce a cross-linked polymeric solid material at a concentration greater than lOOmgml". Tliis photo-cross-linking method is rapid, quantitative, and controllable, and its successful application suggests opportunities for multiple modes of cross-linking in engineering resilin-based materials. [Pg.111]

Therefore, as Mn2(CO)io was never employed in polymerizations of main chain fluorinated monomers, or with inactivated alkyl halides or with perfluoroalkyl iodides, we decided to assess its scope and limitations as photo-coinitiator and to demonstrate that such LjjMt-MtLjj photolyzable transition metal complexes afford the initiation of VDF polymerization directly from a variety of regular and (per)fluorinated alkyl halides (Cl, Br, I) even at rt, thus opening up novel synthetic avenues for the photome-diated synthesis of block and graft copolymers based on FMs. Second, we also set to kinetically explore such polymerization and investigate the possibility of Mn2(CO)io-mediated IDT-VDF-CRP. Third, we aimed to demonstrate the first examples of the synthesis of well-defined PVDF-block copolymers. [Pg.25]

Recently doping of DCH polymer has been reported first by the electrolytic field driven injection of ions into microscopic channels parallel to the polymer chains (142) and secondly by the action of SbF5 thermally polymerized DCH (143), In the latter case the crystal fibrilates on polymerization. Consideration of the crystal structure, however, indicates that the charge transfer must be mediated by the sidegroups since direct approach of dopants to the polymer chain is not possible. DCH polymer is stable against photo-oxidation in consequence (141). Conductivities up to lQ S/cm are reported for doped DCH,... [Pg.214]
