FIFRA Sections 3 and 4 pertain to registration and reregistration of pesticides, with clearly defined data requirements as outlined in Tide 40 of the US. Code of federal Regulations (51). About 120 different studies are Hsted, most of which are to be done on technical-grade active ingredients (TGAIs).

FIFRA23 imposes a system of pesticide product registrations. Such requirements include premarket review of potential health and environmental effects before a pesticide can be introduced in the United States, reregistration of products introduced prior to the enactment of FIFRA to assess their safety in light of current standards, and classification of pesticides for restricted or general use. Restricted products can be used only by those whose competence has been certified by a state program.

To illustrate the application of 2nd-order Monte Carlo analysis, we estimated exposure of Carolina wrens to a hypothetical pesticide in cotton fields in the southwest United States. For this case study, the pesticide is assumed to be persistent, and the goal is to estimate chronic exposure (i.e., total daily intake) at the local field scale. The input data are representative of the kinds of data available during reregistration but, for this case study, are entirely hypothetical. 

An application for registration, amended registration, or reregistration of a pesticide product under FIFRA sections 3 or 24(c). 

Appendix B provides brief case studies of two pesticides, glyphosate and permethrin, for which a pre-existing risk assessment can help to put biomonitoring results into perspective. In both cases, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has evaluated risks for a wide array of exposure scenarios as part of the reregistration process, and there are biomonitoring data whose interpretation could benefit from these risk assessments.
