Periodic acid-Schiff staining

Biopsy material for amebiasis should be processed for surgical pathology and then examined for ulcers containing amebae. The periodic acid-Schiff stain counterstained with hematoxylin is particularly helpful because amebae stain more positively with periodic acid-Schiff stain than do inflammatory cells, and amebae show typical amebic nuclei. Of course, there are no amebic cysts in tissue. [Pg.22]

PAS (periodic acid Schiff) stain is used for the histological staining of carbohydrates it is also used to stain glycoproteins (proteins that contain carbohydrates Chap. 2) in electrophoretic gels (Chap. 4). The stain mixture contains periodic acid (HI04), a powerful oxidant, and the dye basic fuchsin ... [Pg.2]

Histopathology (hematoxylin-eosin stain, periodic acid-Schiff stain, Grocott s methenamine-silver stain) may be helpful in the diagnosis of dermato-phytosis and plays an important role in the diagnosis of subcutaneous mycoses. [Pg.159]

The centrolobular areas exhibit some small patches of round cell infiltration and decreased glycogen staining in the cytoplasm after hepatocytes but little necrosis. Enzymes, such as 7-GTP, glucose-6-phosphate (G-6-Pase), and canalicular adenosine triphosphatase (ATPase) have been generally used as markers for assaying initiated cell populations in liver carcinogenesis [15]. In order to confirm the essential similarity of foci induced by DEN plus ABA to those observed after DEN alone, a comparison of histochemical characteristics was made. The foci induced by DEN plus PH, typically showing positive for 7-GTP and periodic acid Schiff stain and negative for G-6-Pase and ATPase. [Pg.492]

Collagen is also present in certain modified forms. For example, collagen is present in basement membranes which also contain carbohydrates and fatty acids (Windnim et cd., 1955 Kefalides, 1968). Reticular fibers may be comprised of collagen only (very fine collagen fibers immediately after formation), or they may form the stroma of certain organs such as spleen and lymph nodes, in which case a carbohydrate constituent is identified with the periodic acid-Schiff stain. [Pg.307]
