Sodium perfluorohexanoate was prepared in 93 % yield by neutralizing perfluorohexanoic acid with NaOH. Sodium perfluorohexanoate (210 g, 0.625 mol) was pyrolyzed and decomposition was first noticed at 210 C. The reaction became rapid yet controllable at about 250 C. The scrubbed and dried product was fractionated in a packed column yield 141 g (90%) bp 28-29 C. [Pg.700]

Perfluorinated organic compounds constitute a unique class of POP. They occur as completely fluorinated hydrocarbon derivatives, such as CF4, in the atmosphere, where they are regarded as atmospheric pollutants and potential greenhouse gases (see Chapter 7). Other perfluorinated compounds that are organic acids or their salts have been encountered as water pollutants. Most commonly cited are salts of perfluorooctane sulfonic acid others include salts of perfluorinated carboxylic acids, such as perfluorohexanoic acid ... [Pg.105]

Perfluorohexanoic acid is the presumed degradation product of the C6 fluorosurfactants. It has a favorable toxicity profile. Perfluorohexylethylsulfonate is the likely degradation product and has a low bioaccumulation rate (91). [Pg.651]

The solubility of fluorinated surfactants depends on the hydrophile of the surfactant, in addition to the structure of the fluorinated group. The solubility of perfluoroalkanoic acids in water, like the solubility of nonfluorinated alkanoic acids, decreases with increasing chain length. At 25°C, perfluorohexanoic acid and shorter-chain perfluoroalkanoic acids are miscible with water in all proportions. However, perfluorooctanoic acid and perfluorodecanoic acid are only slightly soluble in water [4]. [Pg.198]
