Perfluorination

The preparation of perfluorinated compounds is largely based on the exhaustive fluorination of the corresponding hydrocarbon species and three synthetic procedures have been widely used. Two of these processes, electrochemical fluorination [27] (ECF), successfully used for the preparation of perfluoroacids (3M), and fluorination by high valent metal fluorides [28] such as cobalt trifluoride (itself prepared from cobalt difluoride and fluorine), used for the preparation of perfluorocarbons (Flutec fluids, BNFL), have been reviewed elsewhere. The third major process for the preparation of perfluorinated compounds involves direct fluorination. [Pg.3]

New factors for tlie establislmient of multilayer stmctures are, for example, tire replacement of tire hydrocarbon chain by a perfluorinated chain and tire use of a subphase containing multivalent ions [29]. The latter can become incoriDorated into an LB film during deposition. The amount depends on tire pH of tire subphase and tire individual ion. The replacement of tire hydrocarbon by a rodlike fluorocarbon chain is one way to increase van der Waals interaction and tlierefore enlrance order and stability in molecular assemblies [431. [Pg.2615]

Another approach to the fabrication of LB films from prefonned polymers is to fonn a hydrophobic main chain by reacting monomers tenninated by a vinyl group [102, 103, 104, 105 and 106]. The side groups studied also included perfluorinated hydrocarbon chains, which tilt with respect to the nonnal to the plane of the film, whereas the analogous ordinary hydrocarbon chains do not [105]. [Pg.2619]

To solve some of the environmental problems of mixed-acid nitration, we were able to replaee sulfuric acid with solid superacid catalysts. This allowed us to develop a novel, clean, azeotropic nitration of aromatics with nitric acid over solid perfluorinated sulfonic acid catalysts (Nafion-H). The water formed is continuously azeotroped off by an excess of aromatics, thus preventing dilution of acid. Because the disposal of spent acids of nitration represents a serious environmental problem, the use of solid aeid eatalysts is a significant improvement. [Pg.105]

Whereas superaeid (HF/BF3, HF/SbF, HF/TaF FS03FI/SbF3, etc.)-eatalyzed hydroearbon transformations were first explored in the liquid phase, subsequently, solid aeid eatalyst systems, sueh as those based on Nafion-H, longer-chain perfluorinated alkanesulfonic acids, fluorinated graphite intercalates, etc. were also developed and utilized for heterogeneous reactions. The strong acidic nature of zeolite catalysts was also successfully explored in cases such as FI-ZSM-5 at high temperatures. [Pg.164]

This reaction has often reached explosive proportions in the laboratory. Several methods were devised for controlling it between 1940 and 1965. For fluorination of hydrocarbons of low (1—6 carbon atoms) molecular weight at room temperature or below by these methods, yields as high as 80% of perfluorinated products were reported together with partially fluorinated species (9—11). However, fluorination reactions in that eta involving elemental fluorine with complex hydrocarbons at elevated temperatures led to appreciable cleavage of the carbon—carbon bonds and the yields invariably were only a few percent. [Pg.273]

Many of the unusual properties of the perfluorinated inert fluids are the result of the extremely low intermolecular interactions. This is manifested in, for example, the very low surface tensions of the perfluorinated materials (on the order of 9-19 mN jm. = dyn/cm) at 25°C which enables these Hquids to wet any surface including polytetrafluoroethene. Their refractive indexes are lower than those of any other organic Hquids, as are theh acoustic velocities. They have isothermal compressibilities almost twice as high as water. Densities range from 1.7 to 1.9 g/cm (l )-... [Pg.297]
