Perceptions and beliefs, preferences for particular ways of behaving, needs and motives, feelings - were highlighted in Chapter 2 for the very reason that they are amenable to modification. You can do something about them in a way that you cannot about your personality traits or inner core.

Attitudes, perceptions, and beliefs were presmned to influence whether the intervention is accepted and has potential for long-term success. In designing a strategy to achieve the culture change objective, we began with the recognition that culture expresses shared perceptions, beliefs, and behaviors. It embodies unstated assumptions. We knew that if we changed those perceptions and beliefs, we would change the culture. 

Concerns about psychotropic side effects, which can vary cross-culturally, often lead to premature cessation of psychotropics. This may be related to different propensities for and values placed on somatic experiences in different cultures. Transcultural research indicates that patients from non-Western cultures are more likely to present with predominantly somatic symptoms of psychiatric disorders (Ng, 1997 Parker, Gladstone 8c Chee, 2001), as cultural explanatory models and social demands may serve to bias information processing in the various domains of subjective experience (Angel 8c Thoits, 1987). Several studies have shown that the perception and reporting of side effects are influenced by cultural beliefs... 

Yet another technique has been to interview children or adults (such as teachers, Sch fer Smith, 1996) directly, either using questionnaires (Smith et al., 1992), or interviews (Boulton, 1992a). Clearly, people s answers may not be accurate in terms of what we observe, but this method should inform us about what they think and perceive. This has it s own intrinsic interest, and also interest in terms of discrepancies between beliefs and behaviour. In the case of older children, especially adolescents, we may get uniquely useful insights, while bearing in mind the possible distortions due to selective perception and memory, limited insight to motivation, and social desirability in responses, that bear on verbal report data (Boulton, 1992a). 

You need to subject the new ideas and attitudes you are developing to reality tests . You need to try out your new perceptions in new situations. You need to assess the consistency between your new appreciations and your other knowledge and beliefs. 

Consider this when on my DMT trip, I observed the wadded-up hospital gown as "etheric cotton" or "ectoplasm." I believe I was seeing what shamans see in their curing trances. Had I known more about this state of consciousness, I feel I might have been able to shamanically influence a material object from hyperspace. The principle is not as fantastic as it sounds once one realizes how much habit and belief coerce our perception. This is the tyranny of consensus reality --anything outside of it is automatically defined in our culture as madness or deliberate criminal deviance from social norms. 

There has been a widespread belief in the literature that the kinetic triad [A, Ea, g(a) = kt] can be elucidated through kinetic analysis of data from a single nonisothermal experiment. This is an incorrect perception and conclusions calculated from any such restricted data sets must be regarded as unreliable. A useful discussion of the minimum number of experiments required to determine these kinetic parameters has been given by Gotor et al. (111).
